Chat during fights

I like the Chat and it was fun tonight, but I can't help but see it killed the forum during the fights, the most important time. Anyone visiting for their first time or coming back as a new member during fight nights and seeing it dead likely won't come back. Also not everyone can or will get on it and as we discussed, it isn't scalable.

Once this forum picks up to a couple hundred members on fight night, it will be really hard to keep up with the chat. So, I guess my point is I don't think it is worth it for the forum, when weighed against what the 10-15 guys in there gain from enjoyment.

Appreciate you starting this thread Zeph and I am beginning to agree. At first, I thought the chat would be great for fight nights...but it left the fight thread a ghost town. And like you said, any lurkers/guests that see that are likely to not return. At the end of the day, the goal is to grow the forum and I think a major key in doing that is having an active fight thread, and people interacting in other threads in the forum.

We don't want to become "the chat room" site for fight nights. Also, like you said, the chat room will become more and more difficult to follow as we get more and more people here anyway.

So as of right now, I am leaning towards doing away with the fight night chat room, and leaving the person to person chat. That may not be a popular decision for everyone, but I think it's the right one for the long term growth of the community.

Thanks for understanding my man. I agree, its nice...I like it, but I think everyone with an open mind can see why it could hurt the growth here.

Is there a way to get, the fight night threads to auto load all new post, and not reloading it 1000 by hand, then there would be no need for it.
I love the chat, but told you right away that the post count is gonna take a hit on the most visited fight nights.

I think its definetly worth a try to do away with the chat for the next one to see how it goes. I love the function but it'll feel better with more involved at one place IMO. Like a house party when everybody jams in the kitchen, too many room with a small crowd makes it less enjoyable. And lol at all you suckas who got the boot in the JB ATM.....☝

We'll have Splinty look into this as well. Whatever makes the Fight Thread experience better, and gets more people involved.

It worked pretty good for me. I kept it in a pop out window which I thought worked better.

Personally I think the chat is a GREAT feature and sets this apart from any other MMA board out there.

Then again, I can see the argument that it takes away actual posts from being on the forum and shit, and can be hard to keep up on.

I just think it's a good option to have.

There are chrome/firefox addons that will reload the page every minute, 5 minutes, etc. It's an option until a server sided one is added.

Awesome! Splinty will look into this to make fight threads easier for everyone.

I really enjoyed the chat, especially when over here i'm having to watch the fights at 5am. The chat keeps me awake....I see the valid points aswell in regards to the forum........whichever you guys do, i'm down but i'm throwing it out there...the live chat feature is hilarious and maybe a very unique selling feature for the website.

From when the card started to until it finished it killed the activity on the forum. No new threads were made and we had one guy doing a play by play on his own in the fight night thread. If I was visiting for my first time during the fight card, I would look for somewhere a little more active than that.

Well you have members that may rather do a real time talk about the fights instead of posting in the forums. I see where your going with the slow down, but you need to offer multiple ways to communicate. I am sure if you post that everyone meet in the forum thread most will. Adding and removing a feature to make the threads go up doesn't sound good. Look at what other sites that use both features and see how they do it, there might be a fix already out there.

There was well over 40 something members online i believe but around 20 in the chat. So not all was piled in the chat feature, the thing is to get everyone active and not lurk. moving everything to the forum thread isnt gonna make the ones lurking chat, what will who knows. To me it doesn't matter.
