We should probably start another thread for a a topicI think it's worth noting that the ideals America was founded on weren't worded to be exclusively for whites even though the people who wrote them obviously had certain cultural beliefs. But it used to just be accepted that the ideals the individuals put forward were long term goals. I'm not suggesting that your quote is erroneous, but regardless his personal feelings, Lincoln did ultimately abolish slavery. If Americans truly believe that the foundation the country is built on is rotten, then it's over.
such as this as long as it remains civil. Don't want to high
jack what these guys are doing here
Couple thoughts:
Semantics: "Weren't worded to be exclusively for whites"
1. We would have to define and agree on the definition of "worded"
2. Not just whites but white male land owners. Women, Africans, Native
Americans were not whom the founders had in mind when they framed
the constitution.
Yes it says "All Men created equal" however it was understood
that the "Men" meant not women. (which is why they couldnt vote)
and the Native Americans/Black Africans were not considered to
be "human" and thus obviously couldn't vote or even be allowed to
read in many circumstances.
Its a deep discussion & complicated history
My Quotes
"I'm not suggesting that your quote is erroneous"
Those aren't my quotes. Those are the words and thoughts
of Lincoln, Franklin, Jefferson, Henry Berry.
I wouldn't throw out such things if they could not be verified
as accurate statements as its a very touchy subject.
Look into the statements I referenced and you can verify them.
If any are not attributed statements from the authors then
I'll correct the record.
Its Over
"If Americans truly believe that the foundation
the country is built on is rotten, then it's over"
We would have to define "rotten" and "over".
Personally I wouldnt say the founding was rotten but I'd say it
isn't sustainable. ie... You can't create something with "imbalance"
and then not expect the pendulum to eventually swing in the other
direction.
Does something swinging in the opposite direction mean "over"?
Thats much more philisophical debate and I've had too much
wine to opine with any wisdom.
Take the National Anthem for example...
The 3rd Verse says:
"No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,"
If as a Nation we think that the people that verse was written
against will not one day refuse to sing or salute it then I would
say it is an excercise in futility.
Yes that concept of America is "over".
However over does not mean it can't be rebuilt and made better.
I have faith "humanity" will overcome our differences,
fears, greed, hatred and bigotry...
Otherwise we will destroy ourselves before the turn of the next century
And if we can't stop being assholes to each other then maybe
as a species its better for the universe we did die off anyway.
Just my musings...
