Hardly.. They wouldn't have access to any of the training knowledge, drugs, drug knowledge they do now.. They'd be shells of themselves. Its crazy just how much stronger the competitors are now.
Throw Thor, Brian Shaw, Eddie Hall, Mitch Hooper, and Tom Stoltman into one of those old competitions and they would wreck shop.
Thor and Brian Shaw would dominate in any era just due to their size.Hardly.. They wouldn't have access to any of the training knowledge, drugs, drug knowledge they do now.. They'd be shells of themselves.
Its also interesting now that WSM isn't even really the premier strongman competition anymore. To be fair, almost all of today's competitors are actual strongman competitors...meaning they train for actual strongman as their primary training function.
I actually happened to be writing (a little) about the inaugural WSM in 1977 - it was bodybuilders vs O-lifters vs martial artists vs track & field throwers vs football players vs powerlifters vs etc.
(Franco Columbu (RIP) was <190lbs bodyweight and was co-leading the event with Lou Ferrigno at one point.)
Guys didn't start actually training for strongman until years later, and even then, they were other types of lifters & such first. It wasn't until *way* later that guys were training for primarily strongman.
Early WSM compared to modern-day strongman is like comparing 1993-1995 UFC to modern-day MMA.
