You have to be pretty far gone to cling to that.
I remember at one point a supposed whitehouse insider said that Trump demanded they play a nonstop gorilla channel on the tv for him and he'd say "I like it when the gorilla smashes stuff". Some idiots ran with it and when it came out to be a joke their responses were hilarious, they felt it wasn't their fault for falling for it, it was Trump's fault because it was believable.
I've seen several stories like this, it's not true but it still makes sense that Trump would do that.
