Jon Jones wrestling coach, Izzy Martinez, says there are 'too many variables' for the pound-for-pound #1 to consider taking another short notice fight.

Although Jon Jones was crowned UFC interim light heavyweight champion at UFC 197, many fans were disappointed in his performance.

The Jackson-Wink protege had been out of action for over a year due to legal troubles, and many expected 'Bones' to make a statement against #6 ranked Ovince Saint Preux. Jones did cruise to a unanimous decision victory, but the 28-year-old was lacking the championship spark and tenacity fans had grown accustomed to.

Jones admitted in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan that it wasn't the return he had anticipated, and UFC president Dana White believed the former official champion got off lightly by…

This was my thinking after the fight. Of course he would have finished OSP if he'd had a proper training camp for the guy.

People bitch that he declined the fight with Sonnen, but then when he got a full training camp under his belt, he wrecked Chapel in under a round.

If he had taken that fight on short notice he probably would have won by decision and people would have complained. Instead he did the smart thing and people complained.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I'm laughing at the pound for pound discussion being involved in the decision to not take any short notice fights. On one hand it is unprofessional for the ufc to do this to the best mma athletes in the world. On the other hand, if you claim to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world, why would you have issue with a short notice fight? You're allegedly the best.

Go get some fans Jon. I miss the old breed.
my dad loves being able to conquer every task for a day too ... but long term use of steroids is bad for your health
you say you miss the old breed, implying they fought whenever they had to while the new breed don't, and I think PEDs are part of the reason that was even possible back then.

Jon Jones>Ken Shamrock all day long

are you saying fighters evolved over the last 20 years? no way! it is retarded to think peds were only used during the old days of mma.they are still all on steroids, just better steroids than the deca and winny that the old boys used.
without the ken shamrocks of the world there would be no sport for jon jones .he wouldnt be playing football with those chicken legs either

O
Peds don't give you the type of attidudes that bj, chuck, saku, and others of their ilk.

Jones is selfish. I get it. He has narcissistic tendencies. He's phenomenally talented but he does everything possible to reduce risk and take the easiest route. It's smart, but it doesn't inspire..

BJ Penn? I love that dude but he didn't exactly back up his "die in the cage" attitude when he was laying there getting beaten on by Hughes, GSP and Edgar and he gets so butthurt after losses. Can you explain the Chuck reference?

He's the best, he wins. Gsp reduces risk, would you rather they just start throwing punches in the middle of the octagon and see who wins? Might as well watch a toughman competition.......

You mean broken ribs against Hughes or Georges greases to fight smaller opponents? Yea bj has losses but he fought anyone and everyone and always challenged himself. Shit he's still doing it. Hmm lost to Edgar twice who do I want to fight again? Chuck fought everyone I'm due a title shot, why not fight Vitor. Heck it's part of why Conor is so loved. People want to see others challenge themselves. It's inspiring. It's why mayweather has so much negativity towards career. He always took the safe path. Jon's done the same. Can't fight short notice. Avoided gus. I get it they are smart moves but it doesn't inspire or create fandom.
