Story is fucked up, so what I am hearing is that the director who was the handler for baxter had an EV hybrid for a state vehicle with no high temp sensor alarm, so the car shut off for some reason so there was no AC and baxter was in the car for 4 hours.

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - The Department of Public Safety is mourning the loss of Maine’s first comfort dog.

Officials say Baxter, a 3-year-old chocolate lab, was found dead Wednesday afternoon inside a state vehicle located at the Bangor Regional Communications Center.

DPS is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding Baxter’s death.

The state vehicle, in which Baxter was regularly transported, is undergoing a thorough inspection to identify potential malfunctions that may have led it to unexpectedly stop running, which caused the vehicle’s air conditioning to cease operating.

As a comfort dog, Baxter’s mission was to help improve the mood and well-being of first-line responders in Maine’s three emergency communication centers.

He joined the Maine Bureau of Emergency Communications in 2022.

The Maine Department of Public Safety extends its deepest condolences to Baxter’s handler and his family, as well as the entire emergency telecommunication team.

We will update you on this story as we learn more.

But with the car running or not, why were they leaving the dog in a car for 4 hours? Even with air conditioning that still seems like neglect.

So our k-9 units have a special cage with a sensor when they are at the barracks, the k-9 can not come into the barracks because he is a land shark. So the dogs are left outside while troopers are in the barracks working on reports and such. But each car has a high temp alarm. If the cruiser gets above a certain temp the alarm sets off and it is loud as fuck. It's pretty standard. Not sure why this vehicle didn't have a high temp alarm if it was used to transport Baxter.

With that being said, what I have heard is that Baxter took a dump in the middle of the dispatch center and then was taken out to the car.
