Haha heard the same thing. Also know and heard of a lot of Newfs who became hardcore drug addicts up there when they were lonely and working a job that sucked their souls, but they were making big money, and that's a bad combo.
It’s not for everyone. It depends a lot on the camp that you end up in. Executive camps have their own bathrooms, in jack & Jill’s you share with a dirtbag, and then there’s communal showers (You don’t want to be in the Native ran camps like Barge Landing)

My brother has done it for years now and plans to continue until he retires. He’s hoping to get on with Suncor directly right now. It’s something like $60 an hour, over a grand a month bonuses, company shares, double time anytime he stays longer than his scheduled shift, etc...

If the work is there, I’ll be up there from May until school starts again in September.

Worked as a line chef in northern Norway, sucked ass. Making 4K € a month was neat though. Fuck that, teaching in Thailand is great. Tomorrow school starts and I’m really looking forward to it.

Yeah, short term suffering for long term results is the only way.

Glad to hear you're making this move. It definitely pays off down the road if you keep pushing through. Education makes life all the sweeter imo. The age gap can definitely make you feel like a failure or a loser at times, but think of yourself in a BJJ class or other martial art. You don't even look at the ages really of the people you're training with as a factor. If anything, the young are expected to be better because they're faster, less injured etc. Getting your bachelor's is basically getting to blue belt and everyone who gets there with you is just sharpening their technical skills the same as you are. The advantage you have is patience and wisdom with encountering real situations that allows you to make sure you're getting exactly what you want out of it rather than just trying to figure things out. Something I did was basically spoke to my profs individually and told them that I wanted to focus on a particular area and asked if I could customize my final papers to be about that topic within the confines of the broader theme of the class. They pretty much always said yes because they were just happy anyone was showing enthusiasm for anything. As the older student, it's imperative you talk to your prof often so they know and remember you and so you can work through really understanding things.

Going back for my BA late in life changed everything for me. My life today is completely unrecognizable to what it used to be. I was making more money at some times in my prior life, but day to day is so much better now. I worked full time while going to school full time throughout the process so it was a grind, but gradually school me became real me and work me was just doing as much as I had to to be there.

Some people derive the same satisfaction in trades and I can see why if they love the work because the pay is usually great. But the education will pay off too in ways well beyond the material.
I never considered myself a failure or a loser until you mentioned it. I just thought it was a funny anecdote!

Thanks for the encouragement, I guess........

Just do your research. I don't know what it's like in other places, but here it's harder to get a Primary teacher job because more people go into that..
Interesting. Out his way, a male primary teacher can walk into a job in most locations - especially if they have a second language like French.

With that said, most teachers by training can get a job right now in BC since the Liberals took their ass whooping in the courts.

It's dawned on me that my current tax role finishes in a week and I'll have to go back to delivering food to support myself until something better comes along. It will be the second straight year I find myself in this predicament and, with myself turning 34 in March, I think something has to give.

It's frustrating, because I'm constantly getting good feedback from colleagues, clients and supervisors in my tax roles. I know I have what it takes, and I know that every May and June I'll have 5-6 job offers come flying at me. Trouble is they are almost always only for 3-4 months. I'm doing a Tax Agent Certification course right now, which should allow me to register as a Tax Agent and do my own thing, but it's a jungle out there, and I think at best that will be a high paying side gig (which I aim to pursue regardless of whatever happens).

I know it concerns my partner that we can't really pursue long term goals right now. I'm good with my money so I can always pay my way, but saving when doing deliveries is hard. I want a lot of same things she does, so as I said, after nearly two years and only getting temp gigs between June and October, I think something has to give.

So what am I thinking about doing instead? Believe it or not I'm thinking about Primary School teaching. I have a bit of a child soul, so I tend to get along well with kids (particularly those between, say, 4 and 10) and I find that as I get older, I'm becoming more patient than what I used to be. I know the work can be demanding though - it's a lot more than just rocking up at 9am and leaving at 3pm.

I also don't know much more. I'd love to hear stories and advice for people who may know anyone who teaches, or who has kids (and therefore is exposed to teachers etc). I'm aiming at doing the same to people I know, and have done so already (I know a few high school teachers, and I don't think I'd last teaching fucking teenagers hahaha).
I got faith in you man
you seem like a great human
your gonna do great in whatever you do

Did ya speak to Derek?
I did mate. Top guy, which doesnt surprise me since he`s friends with you. He advised against me going to self-employed tax agent route, or at least going balls to the wall with it, which I agreed with since a lot of tax people are going out on their own, especially in Perth where a lot of jobs have been lost. Cool guy and it was just great to chat to someone with as much life experience as he did. Cheers mate!

Yeah, every teacher I know from here has moved to either BC or Alberta. Mostly BC.

It follows the same principles.
Galt man what kinda work is in demand in Asia that foreigners can do? Teaching? Tech? Other shit? If I get qualified in anything else, I want it to be in something that can easily gt me good work here at home but also in Asia.

For Thailand pretty much only teaching since we’re not allowed to compete with Thais for jobs, other countries I wouldn’t know much about. Maybe diet butcher @diet butcher or Bluesville @Bluesville know more?

I can't imagine any market for tech jobs in Asia. It normally goes the other way around.
I have a couple of friends who moved to Japan to teach English. I believe they had to do a one year course (after having an undergrad) for the qualification but they picked up jobs in high school pretty easy, and now have cruisey jobs at universities over there. Well paid and they have heaps of time off and travel regularly.
The last time we spoke, one was never going to leave and the other was worried about the lack of transferability of job skills when he comes back home.

I've taught in Thailand, China and Saudi.

If you have a degree and a tefl/celta you'll get work anywhere.

If you go as far as delta or the other diploma level course that's offered by Oxford (I think) then you're qualified to a) be a director of studies or b) be a teacher trainer. Both pay well.

A friend of mine was just offered a job at a training centre in China offering 3k plus US dollars. Job requirements were B/a and tefl. The job incudes housing.

A lot of these jobs don't offer what seem like huge salaries, but if you have some hustle in you, you can make decent money. The amount you can save is more important than the top line figure.

In China I was earning about $3500 a month between main job and side job (private classes), but had no accommodation costs and subsidised food from Monday to Friday. Saved $2,500 a month.

Saudi is better in that I earn the same amount for a job with fewer hours and no side gig. But I really wouldn't bother. It's boring as fuck.

Unfortunately I see that a lot in the news
One of the reasons I am a socialist, devaluation of life to a level where taking it is reasonable is a bad idea. Exercise how much you’d charge for a killing?

Oh I wouldn't. By unfortunate I meant I read on the news a lot about people on trail for contract killings and gangland hits and it's often for very small sums.
