A Pennsylvania man charged with homicide Wednesday was fingered for the gruesome crime because he logged into the PlayStation Network using the victim's gaming console he allegedly stole, police said.
That gaming activity on the victim's registered console was a big break that the authorities needed. Police traced the IP address, which led to the mother's house of the suspect, where Hubert Wingate, 30, had been living near Pittsburgh, the authorities said.
Wingate is charged in connection to the shooting death of 34-year-old Andre Gray, who went missing in October and whose body was found in the Ohio River in West Virginia. Gray, a friend of Wingate's, was found stabbed and shot multiple times, local media said.
No motive was given.
This wouldn't be the first time a gaming console helped fight crime. As detailed in a previous Ars report, consoles have even been used by the cops as bait for criminals.
