Just returned from New Zealand with the wife and we went to the opening ceremonies in Christchurch for the world cup.
Never paid attention to cricket before but it's becoming one of my favorite sports to watch.
NZ vs Afghanistan starts at 3pm MT this afternoon.

Each team gets 50 overs which is a set of 6 bowls (pitches) or ten outs. An out is when the bowler (pitcher) hits a wicket or when a ball is caught (just like a pop fly in baseball.
6 points for hitting a home run 4 points for hitting the boundary. (Outside border of the field) 1 point for running between the wickets.

Caught*- the most common way a player is given out, when the ball is caught before hitting the ground. The ball may also come off the batters hand/glove, and may also be deflected from other parts of the batter or fielder, as long as it does not come in contact with the ground.Bowled: when the wicket is knocked down by a bowled ball.Leg Before Wicket (LBW): If ball hits the batsman but would have hit the wicket if the batsman was not there (and the ball does not pitch on the leg side of the wicket, unless no stroke was attempted)

Stumped: the wicket-keeper puts down the wicket while the batsman is out of his crease and not attempting a run

: when the wicket is put down while no part of his bat or person is grounded behind the popping crease:

When the striker breaks the wicket while playing a shot or avoiding a delivery. This can be with the bat or with the body.

Handled The Ball: wilfully handling the ball with a hand not touching the bat without consent of the opposite side.

Obstructing The Field:*when a batsman wilfully obstructs the opposition by word or action

Hit The Ball Twice:*unless he is protecting his wicket or has consent of the opposition.

Timed Out:*Next batsman due takes longer than three minutes to be on the field and ready to face a ball (or at the opposite crease).

If you have never watched Cricket but are interested in trying it out. Look for a twenty twenty game. This is a shortened version of the game, where each team gets 20 overs or 10 outs each. It forces each team to really go for it and can be a lot more exciting. Batmans don't have time to build an innings and get your eye in(process of getting used to how the ball is bouncing off the pitch), and so have to play more extravagantly from the get go. Oh and it only lasts around 3 hours. A 50 overs game is called a one dayer, for obvious reasons and a Test match(the highest level) can go on for 5 days(2 innings each, unlimited overs per innings, you can choose to finish your innings when you decide you have a enough runs).
