For MMA fans who only came to the sport in the advent of Conor McGregor’s rise to superstardom, Dan Hardy is predominantly known as the color commentator who is on the call for UFC events in Europe. But before Hardy became one of the best commentators in the game, he was a pretty good fighter. Now it appears that Hardy is ready to get back in the saddle again and show new fans what “The Outlaw” is all about.

Speaking recently with MMANytt, Hardy said that he has been eyeing a return to the cage for one final fight, and while he fought at 170 pounds for his entire career, if he had his druthers Hardy says he’d like to open up a new division for fighters between 155 and 170 pounds - the 161-pound division.

“If I was gonna come back, I’d want a name,” said Hardy. “There’s a lot of guys in the lightweight division I would look at, there’s a lot of guys in the welterweight division I would look at. If I had my own choice I would take a fight at 161 [pounds] or 162 [pounds] and have that as a new weight class. There’s a need for a weight class in between those two weight classes and part of the resistance is Dana [White] doesn’t want to move the welterweight division to 175 [pounds], and I absolutely agree but that 161/162 weight class would be perfect for the guys moving up to welterweight or down to lightweight. For me, I would fight anybody in that weight class.”

Dan Hardy's MMA record has not aged well, and shows he was never a true contender. His road to the title consisted of split decisions over Akihiro Gono and Marcus Davis, a win over Rory Markham, and I guess his most impressive win in Mike Swick BUT Mike Swick would go on to lose 3 out of 4 from there. Then Hardy would lose 4 in a row to legit contenders, before picking up wins over a shot, about to retire 21-14 Bang Ludwig and an also about to retire 6-5 Amir Sadollah. And Hardy retired in 2012. And he was never some massive name - aside from the GSP fight, he only headlined one other card which was Versus card (low rating fringe channel at the time which got weak cards). And he is mostly forgotten now.

I don't even dislike Hardy, but seriously what makes him think in 2018 he thinks he is worthy of a 'name' at MSG 'if the offer is right'? Why the fuck would the UFC be offering him this? Literally his only value, if he even really has any, would be on a UK card anyway.

If Bisping goes for good they need somebody, anybody to market to the Euros. Only thing I can think of.

Yes, but that's been addressed. Even if he could try to take advantage of UFC desperation in Europe, how does 'I want one fight only against a big name in New York for a lot of money' have anything to do with that?

I have no answers that could help make sense with the decisions made by ZUFFA/WME. I'll see myself out.

I'd like to see him back, he seems like a good guy but I can't see him getting anywhere. I couldn't believe he got the shot against GSP and it was awesome he didn't tap when nearly everyone would have.

Yeah fuck it. Uncle Dana, make it happen.

I'd like to see him fight but I don't really see the appeal, unless the fight is in the UK.

I'm not sure what kind of "right offer" he'd get, considering he was a B-level guy. An exciting guy who was fun to watch, I like him a lot, but lets be honest, I don't think people are going to kick in the arena doors to see him fight again.

When pressed for details on what he meant by “if the offer is right” Hardy clarified: “any offer.”

I'm a fan of the Outlaw and I really enjoy him on the European broadcast team, but his time as a top level fighter has passed.
