It would be gnarly to see prime usman vs prime GSP, but its too close to call imo

Best of all-time talks are fun, but all that really matters are best of today. And tomorrow. And the day after

For instance, could usman drop to 170 and compete today? Probably not. So technically, he's not even the best welterweight today

He's legit tho. I guess I'd still say GSP by a hair. But if someone said Usman, I'd agree with that, too

request granted begrudgingly
lol its weird tho. because if i was asked to describe Usman, i would have said that he was a modern, slightly better version of GSP

but due to your post, i pictured them across the Octagon from one another for the first time. and its just hard to picture GSP losing

I still have GSP best of all time, but I must admit that I missed almost two years of MMA.

What?

Could Usman drop to the weight class that he's the champ of? Pretty sure he can.
lol. what im getting at is the concept of weight cutting. at times, Usman schedules a camp to cut some weight, then does a week long weight cut to get to 170. then fights and is the best 170 pounder that day

but who is the best 170 pounder right now? not Usman. he weighs 200 probably

the example im using may be detrimental to my main point though, which is that i like interim belts and wish there were more since the best person on an given day comes down to who is fighting that day. including "reigning" champs is hypothetical

its a weak argument. but food for thought. and im sticking by it either way lol

I, for one, am SHOCKED, that Dana would say that. I mean it’s not like he’s had an axe to grind with Georges for the past decade +.

actually, let me give a better example

lets say the Paddy the Baddy kid is ranked 30th. that kid gets way out of shape between fight camps

so if we scheduled fights tomorrow at 155, pounds, he would not be able to even compete

now lets change the rules and say that we scheduled fights tomorrow among the top 50 at lightweight at whatever they currently weigh. would he still place as 30th? maybe not since he's out of shape

in other words, i love the idea of giving credit to the people who win fights on any given day. because that day, they have proof of being badass. other peoples past deeds would make for interesting discussion. but if someone didnt fight on a given day, then they arre not part of my rankings for that day lol

GSP is the GOAT. Marty has him in strength and pure wrestling. GSP has him every other facet in MMA. Usman has gotten better along the way and is certainly #2, but GSP evolved the sport with what it meant to be well rounded.

The fact that guys claiming themselves to be the GOAT (Usman, Khabib) still want their fights with GSP tells you everything you need to know about who the real GOAT is.

GSP is the welterweight (and the sport's) GOAT, but prime for prime, head to head, Usman should probably be a slight betting favourite.

Nurmagomedov told ESPN: "I don't want to push my name, 'Call me greatest of all time'. No. I am one of the greatest of all time."

I've never seen Khabib claiming GOAT status for himself, ever. He always seems annoyed by the question, and defaults to talking about Fedor and GSP.

GSP is currently the GOAT at 170. Prime vs prime, Usman would beat him.

Far more power and better wrestling. Significantly better version of Jonny and we saw how that style matchup worked for GSP.

So just imagine a guy that can switch stances and knocks guys on their ass with his jab... That can also match the athleticism.

I can imagine that. but that doesn't jump out as a significantly better version of Johny. just an all-round better and different fighter.

a significantly better version of Johny is a fighter with the same qualities as him, only better. if a guy is jabbing all day, then looking for, whatever, helicopter armbars from his back you wouldn't necessarily say, oh shit its johny 2.0

Its pretty simple....if Usman could use his wrestling to control GSP Usman wins, if GSP can avoid unfavorable wrestling scrambles I'd go GSP.

Prime GSP has killer dynamic striking.

It's a coin flip
