So, I see this post on Gawker essentially shitting on FOX news for having a martial arts instructor come on and teach a few moves related to disarming, attacking an active shooter.

"If you really want to keep your children as safe as possible, don’t ever let them watch Fox & Friends." they finish.

The comments section, not surprisingly, echo the sentiment in the article; that's its beyond stupid to teach kids to engage.

I, honestly, think it's a great idea teaching children and adults how to deal with active shooters. Maybe that's because I'm in Texas and we're fucking crazy, but I really don't understand how it hurts to give people the knowledge to defend themselves or others in such a situation.

The majority view over there seems to be run and hide (which is the FBI's recommendation), and while that's a perfectly fine decision for some, you shouldn't be shitting on someone's inclination to protect a group by trying to stop the shooter

What are your guys' thoughts on it?

Would you rather get shot confronting a shooter or cowering in the corner? Either way your still getting shot.

While I agree I think we need to take into consideration they are soft American children. As a last resort I'd rather them fight instead of die in a corner.

I yhink you have to use common sense, the first two planes flew into the trade centers pretty much unchecked because people were in shock. Once the word got out the passengers on flight 93 decided to go out on their sheild and save others lives.

You dont want to be the guy at the gas station that gets shot because he doesnt want to hand over the till, but we all celebrate the gas station guy that says fuck it and fights back.

regardless, the OP was about should we teach kids how defend themselves against a possible shooter. People were saying its stupid to teach kids to try and take down a shooter, and I just disagree

I think it depends on the age of the kid, its pointless to teach a 2nd grader to confront an adult with a gun. High school is probably a different story. Either way its good to teach your kid self defense at a young age since muscle memory plays a huge part in any kind of martial art.
