Demetrious Johnson has his next title defense lined up – and it’ll be a rematch.
Johnson (22-2-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC), the UFC’s flyweight champion, will meet John Dodson (17-6 MMA, 6-1 UFC) for the next defense of his 125-pound belt. No event has been set yet for the title fight – though Johnson reportedly wants it to take place at UFC 191, which takes place Sept. 5 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Ariel Helwani announced the news on tonight’s edition of FOX Sports 1’s “UFC Tonight.”
Johnson most recently scored a dominant victory over Kyoji Horiguchi in the main event of UFC 186. Johnson’s victory was a record-setting one – he scored the latest submission in UFC history, getting Horiguchi to tap to an armbar at the 4:59 mark of Round 5. The win was Johnson’s eighth’s consecutive victory, seven of which have come in title bouts.
Johnson and Dodson first fought in the main event of UFC on FOX 6 in January 2013 in Chicago. In that fight, Johnson won a unanimous decision in a “Fight of the Night” winner. Many have argued Dodson has been the champ’s toughest challenge yet as champion.
Dodson has won three straight since that fight. He won a fight-night bonus when he knocked out Darrell Montague at UFC 166. Then he stopped John Moraga a little more than a year ago when a doctor waved the fight off after two rounds. After a lengthy injury layoff, he returned in May at UFC 187 and took a unanimous decision against former Bellator bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky.
