UFC middleweight Derek Brunson gives some insight on why he can't fight at UFC 200.

Derek Brunson was offered a huge opportunity to fight Gegard Mousasi at UFC 200 on July 9th. Unfortunately, he is unable to compete on the card due to lingering vision problems. He explained his issues in a Facebook post yesterday:

Brunson (15-3, 6-1 UFC) has had issues with his vision before. Prior to the lasik surgery he mentioned in the post, he had always competed with contact lenses in. When applying for a license in Ohio to fight Ronaldo Souza in 2012, the commission there denied his license request because they have a rule against fighting with contacts. That's why he scheduled the surgery. He did eventually get the Souza fight, but was knocked out in under a minute.

Obviously he has…

I am blind in one eye and near sighted in the other. I can not find a doctor that will do lazik on the near sighted eye because of the chance of something going wrong.

Exactly, it's not worth it. I will wear contacts or glasses and see things....

My father in law recently became blind in one eye. After talking with him, I understand it's extremely difficult from where I sit and i'm sorry to hear you also are going through that

thank you.

I imagine it is much worse for him than it is for me. I was born this way so for me it feels normal, the only major issue I have is a lack of depth perception. Having full vision and then losing it would be much harder to deal with.

Do you ever "learn" that? The depth perception. Is that something that the body can partially overcome? I always wondered.

I occasionally test my body out, this is gonna sound so weird. But I go a few hours with one eye, one ear, no ears, not using my left hand, not using my fingers. See what it's like and keep my mind sharp. Fucking sucks and props to all people who manage it. I cant do half the shit some people can do with all funtioning limbs and sensories.

yes and no. Depth perception only goes out about 20 feet or so, after that you are using your knowledge of the sizes of various objects to figure out how far away something is. That is why I do not have any issues driving but parking is a bitch. But technically no, i will never get better.
