I wash it, and I suck- so there might be something to the magical properties of a dirty belt after all...

I wash my Gi's DAILY.... Sometimes I'll go through two a day (morning and night). There are days where I will just teach a kids class in Gi, and not get sweaty in it.... Those rare days I'll hang my Gi and disinfect it with anti viral/bacterial spray.... I have never washed a belt, but twice a day it gets deep douched in the anti bacterial/viral spray. Now that being said, I've owed Hemp belts which at better at not becoming all gunked out like their cotton counterparts..... They are however twice the cost

Why not wash a belt? It carries just as much filth.

Not so much for the "never wash a belt" thing, but for the fact that it never holds the same. The washing machine ruins the way the belt holds/ties, it warps and shrinks the belts, and it makes the stripes fall off it. I guess with the amount of anti bacterial and fungal/viral stuff I spray on it, it can be considered hand washed, just not machine washed.

That's fair. I've never really had the issue of it damaging a belt. Electrical tape stripes for you too?

i wash everything daily. Now I have 2 gi's to rotate but even with 1 before, sometimes I go morning and night and I'd try to wash everything in between. My Washer's rotating wings broke cuz I used the shit out of it. I'm in the process of buying a new washer now. Why does Ju Jitsu cost so much money? I have to pay for class, gi, defense soaps, stupid white tapes, electric bill, and now a washer!! and I'm still a white belt!

Keep an eye on www.BJJHQ.com. You can find cheap deals on BJJ gear. Plus ask around your school, you might be able to pick up a few old gi's at a steal.

I just used febreze. Padilla and sons makes a belt that holds up pretty well in the wash.
