Fuck the UFC.
John Dodson lost out on more than just a co-main event spot at UFC Fight Night 125 through no fault of his own. He also lost out on a paycheck.
UFC officials have told MMAjunkie that neither Dodson nor his opponent, Pedro Munhoz, will receive their purses following Munhoz’s weigh-ins miss today, which resulted in the fight being scratched from Saturday’s FS1-televised event at Mangueirinho Gymnasium in Belem, Brazil.
The decision isn’t surprising for Munhoz, who came in four pounds over the non-title bantamweight limit at 140. Dodson, however, tipped the scale at 135 without issue. Dodson rep Ricky Kottenstete declined to comment on the fighter’s pay situation until he’d received word from UFC officials.
The UFC was hoping the fight would still go on as planned, with Dodson (19-9 MMA, 8-4 UFC) set to receive 20 percent of Munhoz’s contracted “show” money, as well as 20 percent of his opponent’s “win” money if the result went that way. But Dodson declined to take the fight against the five-pounds-heavier Munhoz (15-2-1 MMA, 5-2-1 UFC) in the final fight of his UFC contract.
Uriah Hall's coach criticizes Dana White's response to collapse: He 'almost died for your organization'
“He came in five pounds over weight,” Dodson said, according to MMAWeekly.com. “Originally, they told me he was three pounds (over), and I gave him the benefit of the doubt and said, ‘Oh, he’s 139?’ They said he’s more like 140-point-something. I’m guessing he’s in the ballpark figure around 141. He’s not bantamweight now, he’s a featherweight, first. Second, I made all the sacrifices and did my job to make weight, and he chose not to.”
The decision to not pay Dodson falls in line with what happened to Vitor Belfort, who also didn’t receive his “show” money after opponent Uriah Hall failed to reach the scale last month at UFC Fight Night 124.
