Should refs be allowed to use a yellow/red card system to deal with fight?

The more they follow the PRIDE model, and the less they follow the boxing model...the better.

I think when this was discussed years ago at a NSAC hearing it was said that no ref should be able to deduct a fighters pay. If IRC that was the main reason it got turned down.

i would agree with that. Some referees make some weird calls. I always wondered how that worked in Pride. Did fighters ever dispute the referee at the end of the fight as to why they were carded? Maybe they felt they were working towards something and was called unfairly.

Yeah I always wondered that too, but since they had their own rules and no commission per say, I suppose it didnt matter if someone complained or not. I remember Rampage bringing in a "red" card and giving it to the ref before the fight.. That cracked me up

Rampages "red card" was for the ref's breath which he said was awful.

Instead of docking pay, maybe use the yellow card to warn for the point deduction and the red to take the point away.

haha yeah. And there was the one time Rampage gave the referee a yellow card before the fight pretending that he smelled. it was pretty classic.

This. As a fan I want more action, but as a fighter I don't trust a referee with my money lol. Plus there's times when you're in a war and you just need to rest, 15 minutes is a long time to go non-stop.

^^^ I get that reasoning but the ref has this power still. There's been countless threads on fouls not being called and that lack of point deduction could result in a foul helping lead to a win making a payday. Also the huge inconsistency in stoppages. We just saw Hendo get a contraversial stoppage, that is all on the ref and potentially cost Dan money. Another example is Rousey dropping Mcmann with a knee then follow up with very weak arm punches which was stopped. On the other side we saw Carwin smash a turtling Brock for 1.5 minutes and no stoppage, that call was huge in Shane's path going forward in the UFC. I'm not saying all those calls were factually wrong but in those examples the ref made a call resulting in the fighters financial future, the same way giving a yellow card would. I'd love to see this card system come into play but with a good definition that refs could base their calls on.

Some type of a card system might be a good idea, but definitely not as big of a percentage of the purse as Pride rules.

i agree with it pertaining to points. i think they would need more of a set time limit though. some refs will stand shit up right when they hear a lot of booing, but people can still be working when that happens. they also need a lot better refs than we see today. they would need to be able to tell if things were being set up, or if someone was just holding on. it would help a lot in the standup department though. starns would be fucked, and silva couldn't just wait for people to come to him. i hate when two counter strikers are paired up.

^^^ with the exception of a few good refs. one of the best may not be able to ref again though.

I understand it from an entertainment aspect, but the less referee involvement the better, imo.

I think we need EY's input.
It's fairly obvious after Rampage yellow carded the ref, the refs got back at the "black man" for beating up Asians, by carding Rampage in the Randleman fight, though it was Kevin stalling.
It really made Quinton mad, and he fights better mad.

They need to use the warnings for timidity more liberally and take points. Short of that yes cards would do something better than status quo.
