In a world where most UFC fighters would be lucky to fight three times in a year, Donald Cerrone is an almost impossible man to keep out of the cage. Already in 2015 (which is only half over at this point) Cerrone has three bouts under his belt. So, how many more could he get before the end of the year? If Greg Jackson has his way, just one. The catch is, that one bout would be for the UFC lightweight title, against reigning champion Rafael Dos Anjos. Cerrone earned his right to be the no. 1 contender when he blew through John Makdessi at UFC 187, breaking Makdessi's jaw in the process.
His claim to the title shot was solidified by the only other legit challenger, Khabib Nurmagomedov being forced onto the sidelines for another extended period of healing after a second knee injury. Now the big challenge is making sure that Cerrone doesn't fight himself out of contendership by getting injured or (as unlikely as it feels) losing a fight. That's the task Greg Jackson talked about meeting head on in a recent interview with AXS TV's "Inside MMA" (transcription via MMAJunkie):
"If we have to kidnap him, handcuff him to a chair, and tie him down until that title fight happens, then that's what we're going to have to do - if that's what it takes. Cowboy' is so close to me. He's like a brother. I love him to death. But we've actually got to wait for the title shot."
"It's going to be hard. It's probably going to be the biggest test of his career - it's not the actual fight, but the waiting for the actual fight. So hopefully he can make it through that test and get to the fight."
