Not many wrestlers have received this much buzz from MMA fans. At least not many amateur wrestlers.

But the community took note Monday when news came that Ed Ruth, a three-time NCAA wrestling champion, four-time All-American and 2016 Olympic medal hopeful, signed a contract with BellatorMMA (via MMAFighting.com).

Charlie Neibergall/Associated Press

It took note for several reasons. First, because regardless of what happens next year in the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, Ruth—who originally announced just in March that he would pursue pro MMA—will be one of the sport’s two or three most decorated wrestlers the moment he sets foot in a cage.

Second, because it is the latest in a series of bold strokes from new Bellatorpresident Scott Coker that have placed the sport’s second-largest promotion within a whale migration's distance of the UFC. That's closer than anyone’s been in quite a while.

Third, because the announcement drafts behind in the immediate wake ofbacklash leveled at the UFC’s new tiered sponsorship deal, which some have theorized might make the promotion less lucrative for current fighters and less attractive to future ones.

The Bargaining Table

Ruth’s MMA debut is still as many as two years away. Though nothing is certain, Ruth is expected to not only make Team USA as a freestyle wrestler but bring home a medal in his luggage.

Until that process is complete, MMA training, at least the kind of MMA training you need to be an MMA fighter, is on hold.

Scott Coker (lef)

"I don’t want to be one foot out and one foot in on this,” he said in an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report. “Wrestling is coming along great. A lot of things in my style have changed up….I don’t feel like [MMA] is a distraction. It’s all training. Some things I do for MMA, working on footwork, boxing, angles, it all helps in wrestling.”

Even so, Ruth chose now as the time to go pro and sign with Bellator. He said one factor was the faith he had in Coker and in Bellator itself.

“There was good cooperation,” Ruth said. “I met with Scott Coker before everything was said and done. I feel like I’m a good judge of character. He’s the guy. The contract he had me sign will help me along the way.”

Bellator Presses Its Advantages

Ever since Coker took the Bellator reins last summer, the promotion has been far friskier on several fronts as a competitor to the titanic UFC. Just last month, Phil Davis, with whom Ruth shares his Penn State alma matter, jumped ship from the UFC to Bellator. Novelty-rich fights like Tito Ortiz vs. Stephan Bonnar or the upcoming Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock have captured their share of eyeballs. And Ruth is just the latest prospect to be lured to Bellator.

Which is fine. We get them in MMA sooner, and younger.
True. Ruth is actually the favorite to make the team in his weight class, but I foresee him having serious trouble with 2012 olympian, Jake Herbert. Ruth has no formal mma training so it will be interesting to see when he will be ready to take a fight. I would guess mid - end of 2017.

Pico is not making the team. There's not way he is beating Metcalf, Oliver, or Stieber. I don't know if he plans on continuing to compete on the international level after that. He is probably ready to fight mma right now though. He already has boxing skills and has some pankration fights under his belt. I suspect we see him end of 2016 or beginning of 2017.

The thing is if Ruth did make the team, he would be delayed by another 2 years or so, right? Being 25 now, 27 when he would start training, assuming he makes the Olympic team, he would be 31 before he really starts hitting his stride and already out of his athletic prime.

If he makes the team, he will be doing nothing but freestyle wrestling until the end of August 2016. Whether either him or Pico make the team or not, they will be all about freestyle wrestling up until the 2nd week of April 2016. That's when the trials are to make the team.

Gillespie is a bad motherfucker that most people don't know about. He won a national title at Edinboro and even won the world team trials one year. He's been extremely dominant in mma so far. All 1st round finishes. Peeps should be excited about him.

There's extra buzz around Ruth because he is a 3 time national title winner and probably cuz Bellator signed him. Most people online get extra jazzed these days when Bellator signs a prospect cuz they want to see Bellator compete with the UFC. The reality is we don't know how well he will transition into mma. Jake Rosholt was a 3 time nccaa champion as well and his career has been decent, but nothing spectacular. If you look at world champions right now....Mighty Mouse, Dillashaw, Weidman, Velasquez, Gaethje, Palmer....none of these guys were ncaa champions. They were all great wrestlers, most all americans. There are exceptions but typically you will find that there is not a big disparity in skill between the 8th ranked guy and the #1 guy in a weight class in college. Having said that, being one of the best wrestlers in the country is the greatest base to start with when beginning mma imo. It's not so much the technique that I am talking about. That can be taught, but the ability to embrace the grind, the mental toughness, and worth ethic it takes become an all american wrestler is why the most of the best fighters in the world came from wrestling.

Ahh. Thank you! I have an interview with him Friday and I couldn't figure out why no hoopla for him. Gonna ask if he still wants to sign with the UFC after this Reebok announcement or if Bellator is looking better.
