So awesome seeing that in the theater when it came out, the whole crowd stood up and cheered at the end, greatest ad for the navy ever
If only I hadn’t already been 27 and a veteran of the USAF when that movie came out. My reaction: “That’s not a MiG, it’s a fuckin’ F-5! And it’s not even real, it’s a model!” I still bought the VHS tape when it came out and ran the sound from the VCR to the stereo just got the opening sequence of carrier ops.

It was funny the USAF and Navy recruiting offices were side by side in the mall. My goal was to get into one of the academies. USAF dismissed me without even looking at my ASVAB score, showed me an ASVAB score from someone that got a 99 who I knew through wrestling and said these are the people you are going to be up against.

I had scored a 98 after a night of drinking and he never even asked my score, said screw this and went and talked to the Navy recruiter.

Even the flaggots looked cool.
You were probably still in grade school in the middle 80s, but at my HS there was suddenly a whole bunch of guys with brown bomber jackets, trooper shades, and short gelled up hair interested in math and science.
That movie 100% gave teenagers an identity and a goal.

Yeah, my older brothers were Tomas Cruz for Halloween. Like I said, I thought the dudes waving around the landing planes were the awesome ones.

The oiled up, homoerotic beach volleyball was accurate though, yes?
