Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir targeted for Bellator heavyweight tournament

Former Pride FC heavyweight kingpin Fedor Emelianenko will take on former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir in April, sources told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani. The fight is agreed, but contracts have yet to be signed. Denis Geyko first reported the news.

Mir (18-11) received a two-year USADA suspension after failing an in-competition drug test for dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (DHCMT) following his loss to Mark Hunt back in March 2016. Mir will be eligible to return to action on April 7.

Mir, a former interim and undisputed UFC titleholder, is currently on a two-fight with defeats to Andrei Arlovski and Hunt. His last win was against Todd Duffee at UFC Fight Night 71 back in 2015.

Emelianenko (36-5, 1 no-contest) is looking for his first win in the United States since 2009, when he finished Brett Rogers in his Strikeforce debut.

“The Last Emperor” returned from retirement in 2015 to improve his winning streak to five, stopping Jaideep Singhand winning a controversial decision over Fabio Maldonado, but recently lost to Matt Mitrione in his Bellator debut.

The eight-man heavyweight tournament is expected to kick off in January, and also features Mitrione, Roy Nelson, Ryan Bader, Muhammed Lawal, Quinton Jackson and Chael Sonnen. Bellator has yet to announce the other three quarterfinals.

Mir has wanted this fight for years, still remember him and Joe Silva attending Affliction to see Fedor Vs. Arlovski.

Fights obviously a little late as both fighters are far from their prime but I'm still pumped to see this match up go down.

Love Fedor but I think Mir has the edge here and locks up a mounted keylock submission for the win.

Both guys are beyond their primes, this is about as even as a fight you can get. Fedor has never taken a USADA test in his life.

I think Fedor can crack Mir on the feet if Mir wants to take the risk. Fedor is always dangerous on the feet because of his speed.

Mir is good on the feet too but his chin is gone so he should win without a problem if he goes for the takedown. Mir is too much for Fedor on the ground at this point unless Fedor has improved a lot there

I have a feeling Mir will want to stand with Fedor though just prove a point, especially cause he's probably a bit salty that he never got to fight fedor back around 2009/2010.

Other PED tests were, and Fedor has participated and passed those few, and beyond that is speculation.
We have Fedor's own words, which unlike many, actually carry weight.
Mir, like most, has no problem using.

I would say, if we see a contract like Mousasi's in place(which could be the case as they were very close for a time and both watch each others' careers studiously), this could get very interesting.

Assuming level playing ground synthetically speaking is a stretch.

We probably won't see Fedor with a contract like most Mousasi's, But it would be interesting to see if Coker honors Fedor's wishes If he asks for tests. He may have some wiggle Room in his contract, being Fedor & all...

why do you say this? Fedor is human like the rest of us. And he's never had to deal with nearly as many tests as most other top level mma fighters have, especially in the USADA era.

And yes I know that USADA tests were recent, but my point is that we dont know sure for sure that anyone is truly clean without a USADA test, even with a USADA test we know that isn't really enough. Fedor has never really had to deal with half as many drug tests as the people in the UFC right now, so to assume that that the playing field isn't level because of Fedor's perceived character is a bit of a stretch, if that's what you're doing.
