Eight years later, the bill to legalize mixed martial arts in New York State finally passed Tuesday evening.

Moments after the news broke, UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and Bellator president Scott Coker issued separate statements expressing their excitement, among other feelings, on the historic news.

Lorenzo Fertitta:

"This has been a long time coming and on behalf of our New York UFC athletes and fans, I want to offer heartfelt thanks to Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Morelle and all the Members of the Assembly – Democrats and Republicans – who voted for this bill.

"Joe Morelle has worked tirelessly to educate his colleagues and build support for legalizing professional MMA and regulating both professional and amateur MMA. He has worked closely with Senator Joe Griffo, who has shepherded this effort in the Senate, where the bill has passed with strong bipartisan support for the last seven years, and MMA fans owe both a huge debt of gratitude."

Scott Coker:

"The New York Assembly’s vote to legalize MMA is a watershed moment for this incredible sport. As someone who has been promoting combat sports for more than 30 years, this is a very exciting time for mixed martial arts. We at Bellator MMA are very much looking forward to hosting an event in the 'Crown Jewel of America,' New York.

"Two Bellator champions, Liam McGeary and Marcos Galvao, call New York home, and I know it means a great deal to the both of them, as it does for the entire promotion. We’ve already been in contact with the great people at the Barclays Center and several other incredible venues, and we can’t wait bring our world-class athletes and action-packed shows to an arena in the Empire State soon."

I'm not sure a Brit and A Brazillian (Coker's statement) is what I would call training in New York much of a marketable home but hey it's an easier training camp and the camps call that home I guess.

Also It's about time New York.

Good to see Coker's statement being given fair coverage as well.

I can't buy into the rumor of Zuffa selling anymore. This is what they've always wanted. And now they have it. I bet Dana and Lorenzo are more inspired than ever to build super cards for NY. I'd bet GSP wants in too. Dude's gonna come back, whoop someone's ass, make tens of millions, then ride off into the sunset.

They might still sell with the Caveat being after this cash-in in New York. First in is a big show but I don't think beyond that there is much they can do if they don't have the horses for Super cards.

It's a cyclical supply and they don't grow any of their own.

From WSOF:

World Series of Fighting CEO Carlos Silva made the following remarks:

"This is an exciting and historic day for our great sport. Those who have been lobbying for the legalization of MMA in NY State, including World Series of Fighting's new COO Michael Mersch, should be commended for their persistence and commitment to seeing through the passage of legislation that will finally allow fans to watch live MMA in the Empire State, and fighters to compete there. We recently opened an office in Manhattan so, along with our television partner, NBC, we are looking forward to bringing our brand of professional MMA to New York very soon.”

I could honestly see the fertittas selling, with them holding some shares in the company. If the price is right, anyone is willing to sell. With the upswing in mma however, I wouldn't completely sell if I were the fertittas brothers.
