Fight Facts: UFC Fight Night Norfolk
11/13/17
Total number of UFC Fights: 4398
Total number of UFC Events: 417
Veterans Day
The fighters going into the six-fight main card of UFC Fight Night 120 had a massive combined experience of 386 bouts.
Fan Favorites
Of the 19 fighters in UFC history to have at least 24 appearances inside the promotion, SIX of those fighters fought on this card (Arlovski, Brown, Guida, Lauzon, Marquardt, and Sanchez).
Fifty is Nifty
Tying the record set last week by Georges St-Pierre and Michael Bisping with a combined 50 UFC fights, the main card opener between Clay Guida and Joe Lauzon was also the combined 50th UFC fight for the two men.
Equilateral or Isosceles?
Tapping to the position likely because of an injury, the official ruling was that Anthony Pettis was submitted due to a body triangle, becoming the THIRD fighter in UFC history to tap from that type of position (Tony Fryklund and Mike Guymon).
He is the Immortal
On his announced retirement bout, Matt Brown scored a first round KO over Diego Sanchez, extending his own record for the MOST knockouts in UFC welterweight history with TEN.
Is it 3.0 or 4.0 now?
Andrei Arlovski became the FIRST fighter in UFC history to break a five UFC fight losing streak inside the Octagon, after picking up a decision win over the oddly-dressed Junior Albini.
Old Dog, New Tricks
Scoring a win in late 2017, Andrei Arlovski first competed inside the UFC in 2000, debuting with an armbar over Aaron Brink. At that time, fellow fight night competitor Sage Northcutt was four years old and had just started training in martial arts.
What’s The Time? Diaper Time!
In a losing effort, Junior Albini walked into the cage to fight former champion Andrei Arlovski, wearing his Reebok shorts in a way that resembled a diaper.
Although unusual, this is not the first time a fighter has taken odd liberties with his uniform, as Dennis Hallman infamously wore speedo briefs to the Octagon against Brian Ebersole at UFC 133 in 2011. UFC President Dana White was so irate about Hallman’s shorts that he awarded Ebersole a $70,000 “getting-those-horrifying-shorts-off-TV-as-soon-as-possible” bonus for his first round TKO win over Hallman.
Hammered
Clay Guida’s 67 second TKO of Joe Lauzon was his first TKO win since 2008, a span of 19 fights, and the FASTEST win of his 14 year career.
Welcome to the DWTNCS Era
With a first round submission victory, Karl Roberson became the FIRST fighter in UFC history to win inside the Octagon after earning a contract from Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series.
Never Say Never Again
Coming into this event, Viviane Pereira had never been defeated (13-0), Anthony Pettis had never been submitted (26 fights), and Raphael Assuncao had never KOed an opponent (30 fights).
Avoid the Curse
For his last nine fights, Andrei Arlovski had tempted fate by walking out to Eminem’s “Soldier.” After losing his fifth straight fight with the track, Arlovski changed his walkout song to Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” and prevailed.
Flying High Again
For the 22nd recorded time in the UFC, a fighter has won after walking out to “Gonna Fly Now” by Bill Conti off the Rocky soundtrack, after Cezar Ferreira used the song and won a decision over Nate Marquardt. With the win, the track reclaimed the top spot as the most utilized AND winningest recorded track in UFC history.
Not a Cinderella Story
Walking out to Eminem’s “Cinderella Man” and losing a decision to Sean Strickland, Court McGee’s use of the track dropped it to the least successful recorded track with at least 15 uses in UFC history.
Fighters that walk out to “Cinderella Man” have a recorded winning percentage of just 23.5% (4-13).
The post-UFC 217 hangover was fueled with a little hair of the dog with some exciting action on this Fight Night card in Norfolk. Personally, cards like these are top notch matchmaking, with several fights that we would think "boy, I can't believe these guys never fought" and some great fun all around.
Per usual, if you have any questions, comments, queries or concerns, please let me know. I'm developing this with fans in mind first and foremost, and I'm always looking for ways to make it better. The segment of "Never Say Never Again" may not always be chock full of things that haven't happened before, but we'll do the best with what we have.
Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out my buddies at Combat Docket!
