If you’re still unfamiliar with the Fight Facts series, I wrote for Vice Sports with a similar series titled “Cage Captions”for a while. This new project is currently a collaboration with the team at Combat Docket! It's a per-card distillation and breakdown of all the Interesting Info and Octagon Oddities on every card, with a sprinkling of puns, winks, and portmanteaus to keep it fresh. The name may have changed, and some of the stylistic features from Cage Captions have been altered, but it’s the same great information presented in a slightly different format. Fightland forever!
In a card that on paper looked less solid than many previous events aired on Fox, UFC on Fox 27 in Charlotte, NC still managed to deliver. With some impressive knockouts including a rare one-shot KO to the body, a thrilling fighter who is "one of us" putting on yet another "Fight of the Night" performance, and a startling trend developing about fighters from one country in particular, this card again showed that star power isn't everything.
Fight Facts: UFC on Fox Charlotte
1/29/2018
Total number of UFC Fights: 4513
Total number of UFC Events: 427
Return to the Queen City
Prior to UFC on Fox 27, the UFC last traveled to Charlotte, NC in 2010, with UFC Fight Night 21 featuring Kenny Florian vs. Takanori Gomi. At that time, UFC on Fox 27 headliner Jacare Souza had just won his first bout in Strikeforce and was 11-2 (1 NC), and Derek Brunson had not yet made his pro-MMA debut.
Brazilian Blues
In the first three events of 2018, 10 Brazilian fighters have competed inside the Octagon. Out of those ten fighters, the ONLY one to win this year has been Jacare Souza.
Got His Number
Jacare Souza, known primarily as a master submission artist, earned his fourth career knockout win with his first round KO of Derek Brunson, and now holds the same number of wins by knockout as he does by decision.
Souza’s only two KO wins were BOTH over Derek Brunson, with a TKO against Yushin Okami and another over Vitor Belfort along the way. Souza has also made three different opponents tap to strikes early in his career.
Bookies Hate Him
In ALL TEN of his fights inside the UFC, Jacare Souza has closed as the favorite. In fact, in all 21 of his last fights with recorded odds, dating back to Dream 4 in 2008, Jacare has been the betting favorite, with Souza going 17-3 (1 NC) in those bouts.
Souza’s middleweight tournament final bout against Gegard Mousasi at Dream 6 did not feature odds as it was Souza’s second fight that night.
The Gift that Keeps on Giving
Recording a first-round TKO over Charlotte native Jordan Rinaldi, Gregor “The Gift” Gillespie improved his undefeated record to 11-0. Nine of those wins have come by finish, including seven in the first round.
Mucho Dinero for Camacho
In his third UFC fight, Frank Camacho earned his THIRD “Fight of the Night” bonus, losing a close but thrilling decision to Drew Dober.
Camacho became just the SECOND fighter in UFC history to start his UFC career off with three straight bouts that each earned “Fight of the Night”, joining Yoshihiro Akiyama. Both Akiyama and Camacho went 1-2 in their three bonus-winning bouts.
Although, Camacho missed weight before facing Damien Brown, and therefore forfeited his bonus money for that battle.
Body Blow! Body Blow!
Mirsad Bektic’s crushing one punch KO to the body against Godofredo Pepey was just the SEVENTH KO from a single punch to the body in UFC history. It was the first KO of its type since Joe Duffy KOed Jake Lindsey with a body punch at UFC 185 in 2015.
I Don’t Like Sand
Making his UFC debut just EIGHT days after knocking out Jose Aguayo in the LFA promotion, Cory Sandhagen smashed his way on to the big stage by taking out fellow newcomer Austin Arnett by second-round TKO.
Never Say Never Again
Coming into this event, Joaquim Silva had never lost professionally (10 fights), Andre Fili had never won consecutive fights inside the UFC (9 fights), and Drew Dober had never won a post-fight bonus (9 fights).
Guess What Time It Is
Walking out to “My Time” by Fabolous ft. Jeremih for the TENTH time in his UFC career, Jacare Souza has a stellar record with the track at 8-2.
With the win, “My Time” became the winningest recorded track in UFC history with 23 wins, and fighters that walk out to that track maintain an impressive winning percentage of about 72% (23-9).
As always, if you have any questions, comments, queries or concerns, please let me know. If you want to know some other stats from these cards or are wondering about something else related to fight results or walkout music, I'm always happy to take requests.
