If you’re unfamiliar with the Fight Facts series, I wrote for Vice Sports with a similar series titled “Cage Captions” for a while. This new project is currently a collaboration with the team at Combat Docket! It's a per-card distillation and breakdown of all the Interesting Info and Octagon Oddities on every card, with a sprinkling of puns, winks, and portmanteaus to keep it fresh. The name may have changed, and some of the stylistic features from Cage Captions have been altered, but it’s the same great information presented in a slightly different format. Fightland forever!

The UFC went back to the city of Winnipeg four and a half years after their first lackluster show there, and what took place was a lot more entertaining overall including three intense KOs, a debuting fighter becoming a star before our eyes, and plenty more.

Fight Facts: UFC on Fox Winnipeg
12/18/2017

Total number of UFC Fights: 4469
Total number of UFC Events: 423

Winnerpeg!
The UFC first came to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 2013 for UFC 161. Due to problems on the UFC 161 card with its main and co-main events, Robbie Lawler vs. Rafael dos Anjos was the FIRST five-round UFC fight to take place in Winnipeg.

Blame Canada
Canadian fighters performed strongly on this card in Winnipeg, Canada, winning four of five fights against foreign opponents (Jordan Mein, John Makdessi, Nordine Taleb, and Chad Laprise), with only Misha Cirkunov suffering defeat.

Early Earners
UFC on Fox 26 was only the THIRD fight card in 38 events so far in 2017 to award all of its post-fight bonuses to fighters on the preliminary cards.

Edge of Seventeen
With his 17th win inside the Octagon, Rafael dos Anjos tied Anderson Silva and Jim Miller for SIXTH place for the most wins in UFC history. Only Matt Hughes, Demian Maia, Donald Cerrone, Michael Bisping, and Georges St-Pierre have more wins in the UFC than dos Anjos.

The Bill Comes Due
In his astonishing FIFTEENTH five-round fight in his 41-fight MMA career, Robbie Lawler’s bout with Rafael dos Anjos was only his FIFTH five-round fight that went the distance.

Lawler had never lost more than three rounds on any scorecard, until getting swept by dos Anjos with three 50-45 scores. Lawler’s record in those five-rounders stands at 9-5 (1 NC).

Don’t Hold the Towel
SEVEN of the last ten fighters to miss weight have won their bouts, after Josh Emmett hit the scales two and a half pounds over the featherweight limit and subsequently picked up a first-round KO of Ricardo Lamas.

Marked Man
Ricardo Lamas has faced off against a member of the Team Alpha Male camp from Sacramento, CA, three times throughout his UFC/WEC career (Danny Castillo, Chad Mendes, and Josh Emmett). In ALL three of those bouts, Lamas has been knocked out.

Sacrificial Lamb
In back-to-back fights, Darren Stewart has been matched against debuting fighters coming off knockout wins from Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, in Karl Roberson and Julian Marquez. In BOTH of those fights, Stewart has been submitted, following his guillotine choke loss to Julian Marquez.

Past Due
Nordine Taleb’s fifty-nine second KO of Danny Roberts earned Taleb his FIRST post-fight bonus in eight UFC appearances, a bonus he felt he earned back at UFC 196.

At UFC 196, Taleb’s knockout of fellow UFC on Fox 26 competitor Erick Silva was massively overshadowed by Nate Diaz and Miesha Tate’s submission upsets of Conor McGregor and Holly Holm, with both of those performances picking up all three of the post-fight bonuses that night.

Seven and Seven
With his first-round knockout of Danny Roberts, Nordine Taleb picked up his fourteenth career win. Taleb has scored seven knockouts and won seven decisions throughout his career.

30 Under 30
Jordan Mein earned his 30th career win with a decision over Erick Silva. While just 28 years young, Mein has competed in an impressive 42 bouts, even with a nearly two-year layoff from January 2015 to December 2016.

Finish Him!
In fifteen fights inside the Octagon, Erick Silva has never won a fight that went the distance (0-3), with all seven of his UFC wins coming by stoppage.

Never Say Never Again
Coming into this event, Robbie Lawler had never fought outside of the U.S. (40 fights), Galore Bofando had never been beaten in a fight (7 fights, his two losses were DQs due to fouls), and Erick Silva had never been involved in the opening bout of the night (14 fights).

Brick Not Hit Back
Walking out for the third recorded time in his UFC career to “Fight to Survive” by Stan Bush from the Bloodsport soundtrack, Rafael dos Anjos picked up his third win with the track with a dominant performance against Robbie Lawler.

Fighters are undefeated in four recorded uses of the song, with Uriah Hall using it before his flying knee/spinning back kick knockout of Gegard Mousasi in 2015.

Confident In His Masculinity
For the FIRST time in TEN recorded uses of songs by Katy Perry, a male fighter walked out to a Katy Perry song, when Julian Marquez made his “Fight of the Night” UFC debut to “Swish Swish” by Katy Perry featuring Nicky Minaj.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, queries or concerns, please let me know. I'm always looking for ways to improve my information and presentation. If you want to know some other stats from these cards or are wondering about something else related to fight results or walkout music, I'll always take requests.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to check out my buddies at Combat Docket!

Some great stuff in there.

@jeicex we were just talking about this the other day. I can't remember who I quoted initially, maybe Mishima Zaibatsu @TillsLeftHand or Freeloading Rusty @MC Gusto ?

Yes we were, I wanted to further answer that stat with this card, thanks to the bonuses going the way they went. With one more card to go, I'll be sure to write up tons on what happened this year including bonus distribution.

Also, I'm taking requests on anything people want me to include in that piece.

Nice. Yossarian @Yossarian and I were discussing pros and cons and W/L ratio for guys who do a full camp vs guys who don't (late replacement or whatever the reason). Any info on that would be interesting.

I've considered putting together stats of replacements, but given that the roster is so large and fluid, keeping track of every cancellation would be exhausting and not worth the work.

I did make a now-outdated list of the fighters who have pulled out most from fights. From that list last updated in September, Thiago Alves leads the pack with 8 pullouts in the UFC. Then we have McCall, Sakara, and Thiago Tavares with 7, and Gamburyan and Bobby Green with 6.

We discussed the theory that short notice fights may have led to more victories than it has to losses, for the incoming short-noticed fighter.

I too am curious if short notice fighters win or lose more often, but anecdotally I'd say fighters making their short notice Octagon debut lose a lot more often than they win. We hear the names that did it, and how exciting it is for a guy like Josh Emmett to make his short notice debut against Jon Tuck and win, or Dom Reyes winning by 30 second TKO in his short notice fight a few weeks after his legendary head kick KO. I'd wager that most of them lose and we don't hear from them much again.

One of the problems that I would face is the delineation of "short notice", whether it be a fighter stepping up one week all the way to a month out. X amount of days would seem arbitrary.

Oh it's one of the many databases I keep. Some people tried to document it years ago but haven't kept it active. Which fighters have pulled out of the most fights?

To be more precisely, how many fighters got their belt that way? Also, I'd be talking about top 10, top 15 fights maybe in cases you know where the fighters' skills are closely matched, not some prelim cases in which they just grabbed a fighter without that consideration of skill level, etc.

Jesus, he needs to stay away from team alpha male. Great stuff as always @jeicex.

this is very interesting. fighters are better prepared when they don't cut as much weight...hmmmm...

but then they have to go through hell to drop those final few pounds.
