A gunman has fired on police out jogging in Carcassonne in the south of France, before taking hostages at a supermarket in nearby Trèbes, firing on police before taking a number of people hostage, according to local media reports. Local authorities are treating the incident as a possible terrorist attack.

And the gunman claims allegiance to ISIS.

• One police man injured In Carcassonne

Note that ISIS hasn’t claimed the attack, HE/SHE claims allegiance to ISIS

• One or two people shot in French hostage-taking Police

• Hostages have been released other then a police officer.

• Mayor of Trèbes says 2 victims in the supermarket.

• Good Morning America says sources say 1 dead, 1 injured, not counting the police officer.

French News Org LCI says 2 dead, 12 injured in the supermarket. Apparently the Mayor announced this as well.

• Feel the need to say the above statement is seemingly only being reported by the above outlet, but they seem to have gotten the 2 dead right before others, so I’m keeping it up. Others are reporting it, but unclear if they are just going off LCI’s report.

• One of the dead is apparently the butcher at the supermarket.

Picture of scene.

The Telegraph suspect says he wants to “avenge Syria” and may have grenades.

• Suspect is apparently known to French anti-terrorist police. Source

• Suspect is apparently demanding the release of Salah Abdelsalm*, the surviving Paris attacker.

• The wounded police officer is apparently seriously injured, bullet passed close to his heart.

France is turning into a hotbed for this kind of shit. As if I needed another reason to never visit the place. Hopefully the cops shoot the guy before he kills any hostage

No doubt. It's infuriating.

Not to make this a religious thread, but:

Beltrame was reared in a nonreligious family but, at age 33, he converted to Catholic Christianity, receiving the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation in 2008 after spending two years as a catechumen.[10] In 2015, he made a pilgrimage to Basilica of Sainte-Anne d'Auray, "where he asked the Virgin Mary to help him to meet the woman of his life" and shortly afterwards, "he became friends with Marielle, whose faith is deep and discreet."[10][11]He had married his partner in a civil ceremony in August 2016, [12] but they had planned a church wedding in June 2018 at the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus.[13] Prior to the terrorist attack at Trèbes, Beltrame made a pilgrimage to Compostela.[14] Beltrame was also a Freemason and received public honors from his Grand Lodge.[15] He had an interest in the history of France and its Christian roots.[10]
I cant help but assume his religion drove him to such a noble end. I made that thread recently about amazing acts of human sacrifice for others...this ranks up there. They are so often about viewing this path as a temporary one. Some woman is alive because of this guy's actions. Just incredible. I hope she is doing okay...probably has some rough survivors guilt :(
