Two basketball players were just changing trains when they were attacked and stabbed. The attackers said they were looking for "stress". They have now been convicted.
The attack came out of nowhere: almost ten months ago, two young Ukrainian basketball players were stabbed to death in Oberhausen . Now the four defendants in the case have been sentenced to eight and a half to ten years in youth detention for joint double murder. It was February 10th of this year when the 17 and 18 year old basketball players arrived at the Oberhausen bus station. They were on their way back to Düsseldorf. When they got off the bus, they were surrounded, beaten and thrown to the ground. One of the attackers stabbed them. He was also young - 15 years old.
The victims were stabbed in the stomach and back. One died in hospital the same day, the other succumbed to septic multi-organ failure ten days later.

The background to the crime is unclear. The public prosecutor's office had originally assumed that the athletes were attacked because they came from Ukraine. However, according to the verdict, this motive was not confirmed.
Defendants "sought stress" in Oberhausen
According to court spokesman Mathias Küsters, the defendants, who were between 14 and 16 years old at the time of the crime, were "looking for trouble". They had agreed to meet shortly before the crime to "provoke trouble". The perpetrator and victim were sitting in the same bus. The basketball players had not given them a reason.
Not much was known about the defendants. The trial was held completely behind closed doors because of their young age. The 15-year-old at the time of the crime is said to have confessed to the knife attack. Others are said to have admitted to hitting each other.
