I don't have a source for this, but I remember reading the story of someone who drowned and was resuscitated. They said it was a terrible sense of rising panic, right up to the point where they couldn't hold their breath any longer. When they finally gulped in the water there was an almost immediate relief, as if their brain accepted the fact that they were dying, and apparently the last few seconds of consciousness were incredibly peaceful.Unfortunate update.
