UConn officials explain thinking behind African American male-only section of dorm

Isn't one of the whole points of college/University to expand your horizons? This really seems counterintuitive to that.

"It is a space for African American men to one, come together and validate their experiences that they may have on campus. Number two, it's also a space where they can have conversation and also talk with individuals who come from the same background who share the same experience," said Hines.

Is this favoring the black students, if so concerned (and if it was favoring white students, I would also be concerned........keep reading) or is this segregation, if so concerned............summary, concerned

The University thinks it will benefit African American male students. UConn has a graduation rate in the low 80's and AA males are in the 50's. If it helps raise that rate then that's a good thing for everyone. But this just seems like it's going to create an echo chamber for those students and they may not encounter as much diversity in the University as they will in the real world and I can see that setting everyone up for failure.

Question for those who are or recently been in university and for check it @Check it. Is this a ground breaking thing that hasn't been done since segregation? Or are there Asian female only dorms etc?
