Renowned MMA trainer Greg Jackson said B.J. Penn could’ve pulled off a March return to the promotion’s octagon. But in light of a delay, the UFC Hall of Famer has had more time to get better, he said.

“He’s really starting to look really good,” Jackson told MMAjunkie. “It’s starting to click with him. Good sparring. More of the same. Just pushing forward.”

Penn (16-10-2 MMA, 12-9-2 UFC) was targeted to meet Dennis Siver (22-11 MMA, 11-8 UFC) earlier this month at UFC 196, and then at UFC 197 before the promotion tabled his comeback due to allegations from a former employee of his website. UFC officials and Penn’s rep did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his current status.

Jackson believes Penn remains in a holding pattern, and he continues to work with the 37-year-old ex-champ at Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque, N.M.

“We’re trying to work on his technique, so every day, we can get a little bit better,” the coach said. “His numbers are looking good, and I think he’s got a few good years left in him.”

BJ needs to stay retired, both for personal and athletic reasons. Jackson also needs to hire a social worker for his band of misfits.

I dont see why he would want to fight a guy like Sivera anyways. it does nothing for his legacy etc. why not take high profile fights? I am all for BJ getting back in there, and I dont expect him to contend for the title etc. I want legacy fights from BJ.

BJ - Renzo 2

BJ - Nick 2

BJ - Gomi

BJ - Kawajiri

Some guys just love to fight. BJ's one of 'em. I think he'd do it for free.

even BJ - Diego 2 would be a better fight.
I like all those fights you mentioned, and i have no idea why it was matched up this way. Sean Shelby would know. Maybe scheduling, lack of fighters wanting it? Lentz seemed to me to avoid taking the fight even though they had beef.

I don't believe shit Jackson says.

He's a trainer that's also a promoter for guys who pay him.

BJs getting better every day? Compared to what, a BJ that's well past his prime and was already a legend?

Give me a break.

I can understand that too, but why Siver? "Dad bod BJ" would destroy Siver, let alone "finely tuned Jacksons mma BJ".
It's a tune up fight. His legacy would be more in tact had he taken a tune up fight the last time he made a comeback rather than jumping in the cage with Frankie. I wouldn't be surprised if his opponent changes by the time he returns.

Good point about a tune up fight. No disrespect to Siver either, but BJ's one of the best.

BJ has said he is doing this to make a run at the featherweight title. He wants to be the first and only three division champion. He is trying to make a legitimate run at the title. Not just going up in weight to take budo fights.

Seeing BJ at a top camp is something we've been robbed of. I'm excited for this comeback. I think it will be better than the others. BJ's problem has always been yes men surrounding him.

That's truly an awesome goal. Best of luck to one of the goats.

Agree. But more than anything, I think he's chasing Frankie Edgar. He just can't let that shit go. He got beat 3 times (although first fight result was questionable).
