citing a general reason for retirement... but the real reason was they got HIV or some other serious incurable disease so they were no longer allowed to fight?

GSP "retired" to take some time off to consider USADA implications.

I dunno, good question.
Some vague things come to mind, but nothing really coming to the forefront.

Frankie Perez is going out at the top... for now.
The 26-year-old lightweight [10-2 career, 1-1 UFC] recorded the knock-out of the night at UFC Saskatoon then delivered another blow - his immediate retirement from the sport.

Perez defeated Sam Stout with a crunching cross before finishing him on the mat with some punishing follow-ups.

The emphatic manner of Perez' victory would have ensured him a higher profile bout, next time out, but he opted to put his future in his own hands.

He opted to step away from the UFC, citing his family as the main reason, and declared he was "sick" of the MMA grind.

Alexander Emilianenko, the younger brother of Fedor, is diagnosed with Hepatitis, not sure which one specifically. And is not allowed to fight, legally, due to obvious medical reasons. Read it a while back somewhere. Guy is a convicted rapist. a complete opposite of Fedor.

TJ Grant retired due to numerous concussions... I heard that AC's weren't going to allow him to fight because he suffered from the effects.

Frank "retired" due to a contract dispute... He couldn't go elsewhere, so he decided not to fight anymore (until that contract expired).

Kampmann also retired due to injuries, and the realization on his own that he'll never be the best.... And if he didn't think he could be the best, he didn't choose to fight.

Now the one guy who arguably could have been a GOAT, was apparently the toughest and best fighter in his team around the time his team had a lot of young and upcoming talent.... And retired due to numerous injuries.... Was team Cesar Gracie member/captain David Terell.... Dave was a BEAST grappler, and good striker.... Injuries shortened his career. At the time, Nick said that Dave would kick all their asses in training.

Does anyone remember Steve Cantwell? Didn't he retire at one point and it was super unexpected and with no real clarity to it?

I remember him from back in WEC days (before they dropped the middleweight division). I don't remember why he retired, but he went on a pretty good losing streak before stepping away.

I forget who it was against, but he pulled off a nasty looking armbar in one of his first UFC fights.

Edit: Armbar was against Razak Al-Hassan

Chris Holdsworth was lighting the world up when he called it quits.
