PS. From going through the comments, it would appear that although there were some ants moving around the entrance prior to the cement pour, the main ant colony had abandoned this particular nest and moved on prior to the scientists starting the project. A lot of the comments are back & forth arguments over whether the scientists committed ant genocide, lol.
I prefer to believe that they didn't and I think a colony that size would have a lot more ants moving around the entrance area if it was still fully occupied.
