As for the actual spilling, I don't remember much about it as it happened very quickly. I was looking at my computer screen and reached for my coffee, and the next thing I knew it was all over my desk. Even though I wasn't looking at my cup, it's a move I've done thousands of times without looking, and never with disastrous results like today.
I lucked out in the sense that the cup was only half full (yes, I am a "half full" kind of person) and nothing was damaged, but a coworker was there to witness it so needless to say I've lost some face around the workplace today.
My coworker was no help in pinpointing what went wrong - he was looking at something else and only witnessed the cup falling over. I did call up my brother, who is an engineer by trade and has a much greater understanding of physics than I do.
The most likely cause was that I grabbed the cup behind it's axis and the misguided squeeze propelled the bottom of the cup forward, causing the spill. I believe this is probably the 2nd most common cause, behind just simply knocking something over.
