Been thinking about this.

I think the UFC is feeding the public a stack of shit 70 stories high, and tonight's statement was made to keep everyone that bought tickets and made travel arrangements, on board.

I don't think Mendes has been told he's fighting yet, because the UFC doesnt want to risk it being leaked...but he's been told to train like he's fighting on July 11th. Then sometime after July 4th (like Monday 7/5), the UFC will pull a bait & switch and announce that Aldo's ribs haven't healed like expected, he hasn't been able to train since the injury, and it's Mendes/McGregor in the co-main, for the interim title.

And speaking of an interim title...it's a joke that it will be on the line. Aldo will be healed in a couple of weeks, and will fight in October. There is no justification whatsoever for an interim title, other than them wanting McGregor to hold that belt, so it will be a unification fight when Aldo returns. They wouldn't do this for ANY other fighter, besides McGregor. And this is what makes anyone paying attention, not trust the UFC.

Back to UFC 189. I'm not buying that Aldo/McGregor happens.

I agree. I think the purpose of going to the media about his training injury was to let the UFC and everyone else know he won't be fighting. If he intended to fight through it there would be no reason to let the injury be known. I also agree the interim title is BS. It makes no sense in this case other than for the UFC to try to make back some of the money they spent promoting this fight.

I agree that his will happen. The good news about it being for the interim belt is that is will be a 5 round fight.

i don't think conor will make it 5 rounds with mendes.
I do. The problem is Mendes will still win easily and Aldo will come back in a few months healthy and beat Mendes up for the 3rd time, while all the hype built up around Conor will have been deflated thus effectively killing any excitement the division has created over the past several months.

Yeah I agree. I'm at a loss of words at how terrible this shit is. The Conor /Dana bromance will be short lived when he gets his ass whooped. I can't wait to see it.

I know we like to rag on Zuffa around here, but sometimes they do the right thing when it comes to this stuff. It's true they protect certain fighters for a while, but when it gets down to brass tacks, they will put those fighters to the test eventually. If Conor really is the one-trick pony you seem to think he is, then Zuffa actually doesn't have a lot to lose by having him fight Mendes. Because in that case he was doomed to be exposed the very next fight after Aldo.

There's only so much puppet-mastering Zuffa can do, and they know this.

I'm leaning towards more to thinking it's a fake injury and the fight will happen but then again I don't care about it. I've done a remarkable job at ignoring conor so far.

when have we ever seen the news of "fighter injured; fight in jeopardy" ??? if he had a rib injury and was contemplating fighting through it then no one outside of the gym would know about it. they wouldn't hand the teammate who've done it to the press. IMO Nova Uniao is messing with y'all.

I honestly think the fight will happen not because it should but because egg wants nothing more than to have conor have the belt. This is the modern day WWE and conor is the Triple H. no matter what egg wants to have his lil buddy a champ whether its by buying it or gifting it to him.

I don't think putting him in front of Aldo (Undefeated for 10 years) is gifting it him? Remember both are injured. I know you love rant about Dana but we got to add a little rationalism into this.

I think they are making it an interim title fight if Aldo doesn't fight to keep Mcgregor's name on top of the bill. If it wasn't for a title, he couldn't headline, which would remove his name from the card(he would still fight on it, but it would be UFC 189 Lawler vs Macdonald), and in turn take away PVP buys.

Rationalism is Edgar fighting not Conor.

Maybe the UFC should mimic more of the awe-inspiring controversy of having more fighters ready in the wings in case a card is about to fall apart. Let the fans know who is on-deck, or in the hole, and then they are in shape when it comes to an upcoming card. Probably impossible in the long-run, but it would offer more transparency. Nobody likes a guessing game, unless you do.
