Do you think this would bring back some legitimacy to bjj? Its been under some serious scrutiny lately especially the application of the guard. After reading a interview with Werdum I can see him catching an arm or triangle when Cain gets on top as heceludes to. Thoughts? http://mmajunkie.com/2015/02/fabrici...did-with-fedor

The fact that nobody wants to engage Verdum legitimizes BJJ. Other Than Big Boy Overeem.

Yeah, I think they have been trying to avoid Werdum on the ground. Just like the Werdum - Hunt fight. Werdum got knocked out but Hunt didn't risk being on the ground with Werdum..

i dont think it legitimizes it. Why would you play into someones game and jump in to their guard and play into their strength? I think when Reem fought Werum he showed how easy it is to combat it.

Bjj is still utilized in mma..just don't see the sub aspect as much..I believe the no gi training most fighters are adapting is key in this..sean sherk is a black belt level bjj but don't sub people but uses his skill set to nullify others sub offense..Also Bjj still is on display in sweeps and transitions..just see more people using to get in position to tko opponents or maintain position to win rounds...Bjj isn't dead ther are just WAY MORE fighters versed in it and many other facets of the fight game..we got use to seeing bjj be so dominate which it was but now we have more of a level playing field..just my2 pennies..

^^^^^ I agree with you. I created the thread mainly because bjj has been getting some heat for its effectiveness but I still think it has a major role in having success in mma. To see a guy like Cain get subbed would be a great way to show this as he's got an excellent top game.

It is also much easier to learn sub-defense so most guys that arent Werdum level bjj players can still survive, especially someone with Cains wrestling control back ground.

Yup, and this is why I think if he can finish via sub it'll be a great statement.

Its a good chance it could happen bcus I think this fight will be fought on the mat. I dont think Cain is going to like standing with Werdum. His striking has come a long way lately.

I think Cain will put hands on Werdum and push the pace and tire Werdum..and tko Werdum in late rounds..hard to see Cain getting subbed..then again i didn't see Fedor getting subbed either..

Too many guys comfortable allowing guys to lay in their guard, without attempting any offense or sweeps. That's when fights become boring, if the guy in top position isn't working to finish...but just working enough to avoid it getting stood up. BJ Penn fell into this mode. Would love to see BJJ guys take the route of Werdum, Pettis, Lauzon, Cole Miller and attack from the bottom....it would make the sport more exciting.

IMO BJJ is extremely effective with certain techniques. The problem is practitioners now are so focused on the competition sport side that they are not focusing on the set ups for submissions and such. In the sport world you rarely see submissions in the gi it's all about sweeps and the new guards. In no-gi there are a few more subs but still a lot of sweeps and guard passing. The guys who really make a splash are the ones who train submission set ups constantly like Gary Tonon and Kron Gracie. The future is a hybrid of these games like bjj, catch wrestling, freestyle wrestling, and sambo. Not just in mma but in grappling in general. I think Werdum winning by sub isn't going to legitimize bjj because we've turned into a bunch of pajama wrestlers who don't go for the finish
