An image of a Brocken spectre, where a person’s shadow appears on the fog.

Brocken comes from Brocken or Blocksberg, a mountain in Germany where the phenomenon was first described. In mythology, it was referred to as a mountain guardian, who would guide lost spirits through the fog.

Scientifically, this effect is fairly easy to explain. The sun causes a shadow to fall upon (and through) the water droplets of the cloud or fog. The distance of the shadow makes it hard for the viewer to accurately judge the size and proportions of the shadow. The colorful solar glory often seen around the shadow is produced by light refracting within the water droplets. As clouds shift, the Brocken spectre can seem to flicker and move.

When mating, hermaphroditic banana slugs stab each other with their penises. Usually both slugs end up with fertilized eggs, and they go their separate ways. But sometimes they get stuck, and have to chew each other's penises off, an act called apophallation.

Mike Tyson used to do a neck bridge workout for 30 minutes daily to grow his neck up to 20 inches. He would perform 200-500 neck bridges, both front and back, to strengthen all sides of his neck and also used a neck harness with added weight for flexion and extension movements. He’s said later in life that he regrets doing neck bridges due to the damage it caused to his spine.

What recently discovered exoplanet LHS 1140b may look like. Found by Webb telescope, scientists say one side is all ice, while the other side that is tidally locked to its star has a region of liquid ocean and cloud, appearing like an eye.
