Apparently there is a big stink about Apu. Some guy made a documentary called "The Problem with Apu" about how damaging the character was by perpetuating stereotypes.

The Simpsons seem to have brushed it off and people aren't happy, specifically because Lisa was used to brush it off and she's known as the "liberal", "moral compass" of the show.

Personally I was just surprised people still watch the Simpsons. Wasn't the show all stereotypes?

I just find it weird that so many people who call themselves comedians and work in the business of "funny" are actively trying to stifle people and get them in trouble. Weird!

I've not watched it in years either, it used to be fun watching it with my friend's 8 year old who had no idea what she was laughing at but not since then.

The actor who played Apu's nephew was on Good Morning America this morning saying how bad it was. Don't play the character then!

Homer is a negative stereotype.
so are Marge, Bart, and Lisa. So is Kent Brockman, so is Principle Skinner...

if Apu is racist, so is every character on the show. Almost any show.

Now days the only type of minority you can openly mock and insult is straight white males. In order to keep up with the times they will have to turn Apu into a middle class white guy, then they can make fun of him as much as they like. But then again, the rest of the show is already making fun of white guys.
