So the fact that Americans are generally retarded isn't in dispute. Every non-American knows this. Of course Americans themselves don't know this - but they're retarded, so how could they know? It's not their fault.
Religious people are mongoloids, I mean they believe a space warlock controls their insignificant lives. And there are more religious people in the US than any other developed country. So statistically there are more retards there.
But I think it goes deeper than this. I've noticed that when political commentators are talking about voters, it has become such a common line that you 'can't convince people with facts or logic, you need to appeal to their emotions', that it's become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Nobody even tries to use facts because they assume people are too retarded to listen, which means they never get exposed to facts in the first place.
There is also an extreme commitment to the 'middle ground'. Political shows will bring on a normal person who says something like 'we know universal healthcare works because it works in every other developed country' and then a guy in a cowboy hat will eat his own shit and scream about socialism. Then the audience will assume that 'the truth lies somewhere in the middle'.
Ultimately I think this stems from the fact that people have to 'respect people's religion'. Some people exist in reality, while others worship a fictional character, and the people who live in reality have to just 'agree to disagree'. And if you're not allowed to dispute something as basic as the fact that there isn't a magical cloud wizard controlling everything, this means you have to take the same approach to everything else. Which means Americans are even more retarded than the sum total of religious retards.
