BERLIN — Automaker Volkswagen says a robot has killed a contractor at one of its production plants in Germany.

A spokesman for VW says that the robot came from the future to kill a technician that would one day build a car that could destroy the world.
whoa!

I work on these types of machines. Im not sure where the line is drawn for when a machine becomes a robot. To me its just another pile of shit waiting to break so I can come troubleshoot and fix it. These arent AI terminator type robots. They are PLC based production type, programmed to do repetative tasks when the permisseves are met. There is no excuse for a person to be behind the cage or in the machine while powered up. There would be many safety interlocks built into the machine to keep this from happening. Someone would have to try real hard. Like closing the door behind them and having they're buddy try to run it.

After re-reading the article, it said the machine was being "set up". A lot of times during the construction of automated machines like these, certain safeties and interlocks are not functioning just for testing purposes. But still, this should never happen. This is usually done by the set up enginneer contracted by, in this case VW. Working with a mechanic and an electrician durring set up and testing, throughout install. Its likely that the dude killed was prob electro/mecho. 100% human error, no doubt.
