Jingliang should receive punishment for eye-gouging Matthews, not bonus

If you haven’t seen the moment that Jingliang blatantly gouged Jake Matthew’s eyes in an attempt to escape a guillotine at UFC 221, go take a look.

Jingliang puts both hands on Matthews’ face, and digs his fingers into Matthews’ eyes. The foul appears to open a cut on Matthews’ eyelid, and his vision was blurred. The referee didn’t even stop the action, despite being right above the foul as it happened. Instead, he let it continue, Jingliang escaped the guillotine, and the official simply warned him not to commit another foul between rounds.

    There’s a running joke in…

Maybe a gif is out there, but here's a still. Matthews had a guillotine locked up, and Jingliang gouged his way out.

Apparently you don't have to make weight anymore either to get a title shot. They're trying reverse psychology to keep their fighters in check.

I think there was an even crazier thing to come from that mess of a fight. Shields fouled too, and both were punished by the NSAC. But the craziest thing is that the fight's result was upheld, and not overturned to a NC because it was a disaster, where the NSAC said especially Palhares committed fouls bad enough to suspend him for 2 years and fine him 40 grand.

You gotta overturn that mess. How could you not?

I don't think he was even Warned 1 time during his whole UFC career about his eye pokes ...has he?

I do find it funny that folks are expecting someting done about an eye rake, when a champion has been using eye pokes instead of Jabs his entire run.

I think he had a couple warnings but without points they are hollow...especially since he jokes about doing it on purpose and calling complainers babies.

Jon didn't poke in the OSP fight and also DC2 if I recall, but many of his fights it is his #1 setup weapon and blatantly obvious

The Gif at the top of your post shows how much UFC cares about pokes.

    Very Gerard Gordeau like

Agree 100% with your post, it wasn't till the forums were bombarded with examples of Jones poking eyes as an obvious tactic he was implementing that the UFC Refs started looking for it ...that wasn't till the last couple fights.

I don't expect anything to be done about this, this tactic is something the Ref needs to observe and handle right away in the cage.

Holy shit man. Didn't they recently implement instant replays? How much more of a blatant foul is there? All I can think of would be Simms stomping Mir while holding the fence .

No replays in Australia, they didn't adopt those rules yet. In fact, the rules for WA were worse than usual, in that a) no scores are identified by the judges, meaning that we only get a final score at the end and can't see round by round, and 2) no scorecards are collected if a fight ends by stoppage. So, not great for scorecard lovers like myself.

Watching that replay pissed me off. It is one thing to cheat here and there to get a competitive advantage and it is another thing entirely to endanger a fighters sight for the rest of their lives. But, this will make his future fights more exciting while we watch, hoping he gets KTFO.

You are right but I think this one showed more intent. The regular run of the mill eye pokes, which mostly result from posting could be argued accidental, even though posting with outstretched fingers is now a violation. Intentionally putting your fingers into your opponents eyes in an attempt to injure, in order to escape a submission shows wanton disregard for safety and clearly shows a desire to violate the rules IMO and should carry a stiffer penalty.
