one of the main reasons I left OR when I had kids.
the public schools are garbage and the teachers DGAF. They constantly bond "schools" and spend the money on administrators and buildings. They do the same in AZ, but at least charter schools are a thing here.
I had a friend who's daughter was taking AP Calculus in OR high school...a legit "math whiz" by OR standards. Another friend had a cousin taking "MAT 087" at community college in Texas. He was struggling, so he asked friend's daughter to tutor him. She agreed, but couldn't figure out his Calc problems, so she asked her AP teacher, who had a Masters in Math. He couldn't figure it out and just said "we don't do that math in OR". I was like "WTF, let me see that shit"
basically, they didn't teach where the derivation rules come from, i.e. f(x+h) - f(x)/h.
They just handed out the derivation shortcuts, e.g. x^n = nx^(n-1), and told kids to memorize it or find a derivative table.

One of the perennial defenses of mediocre public K-12 schools is that they just don't have enough money to work...

Where did all the time go Lars? Seems like it went by in a flash of just a few fleeting moments.
I'm sure there was more to it than that but darned if I recall most of it now.
