Prior to his UFC 182 title defense against Daniel Comier earlier this year in Las Vegas, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones tested positive for cocaine metabolites in an out-of-competition drug test administered by Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).
There's just one little problem (and it wasn't this)

Cocaine was not on the list of banned substances; therefore, it cannot be considered a failed drug test. In addition, the commission has yet to explain why the test was even administered in the first place, or why the result -- which carries no penalty -- was shared with the general public.
A fact not lost on Jones, who told MMA Fighting he's not ready to move on just yet.
"I do have a great legal team behind me. We haven't quite completely let it go. We wanna see what went wrong and what could be done about it. I'm not gonna comment too much on that whole situation, but I'm aware that there was some foul play in the whole situation and right now I'm kinda weighing my options."
Not coincidentally, the results of the test were only revealed after UFC 182 went down (and everyone got paid).
That constitutes foul play as far as Jones is concerned, and he's letting his attorneys consider any and all possible legal ramifications. In the meantime, "Bones" is preparing to put his 205-pound title on the line at UFC 187 against light heavyweight slugger Anthony Johnson.

Jones should man up and just take his lumps on this one. A little bit of humility would go a LONG way in rebuilding his fan base. This guy just doesn't get it. He's still blaming others for his mistakes and deflecting. Every story I hear about this child makes me dislike him more and more.

100% agree. I think people just want to see genuine humility from the guy, one time. Just once.

While this is probably not the best way to win over fans, although then again that boat has probably already sailed, he might have a legit case. By releasing the information, that they weren't even supposed to test for, they hurt his image with sponsors at least and I guess a good lawyer too could argue with fans as well. Potentially expensive gaff for the NSAC.

As much as I dislike Bones, this is true.

He was also fined like $25,000 by the UFC, which he shouldn't have had to pay if they were testing him for things they weren't supposed to, making it public, etc.

I personally can't stand Jones for several reasons, but he got the short end of the stick on this deal and I don't blame him for raising a stink about it.

He got the best possible outcome with the perfunctory interview confession and 1-day rehab followed by everyone forgetting about the issue. Making people remember the incident is not a good idea. He has privacy rights here but it may not be wise to insist on them. If he keeps pursuing this he'll need to walk a very straight line for the rest of his career, something he might not be willing to do.

He needed to be fined and suspended. It is no different than a random drug test an an employment. As 90% of the fighters say, they ARE employees. So with that said, you cant run from or sure when you test positive at a employment job. Sorry but Jones is Coke king.

First let me say, I am in no way shape or form a fan of JJ never have been never will be. I know several guys that have trained with him at Jackson's and heard countless stories of him doing coke including how he absolutely loves snorting coke of strippers tits.

With that said, the test he took was not supposed to be for anything other than PED's. The results of it being made public are completely bullshit and he will win a lawsuit against the NSAC because he can show extensive damages(mostly to his image). I would also be willing to bet that HIPAA Laws might come into play as you cannot divulge medical information which is what they did.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, which Im sure Zuffa knew for a long long time, how do they deal with it? If they suspended him it wouldn't hold up because the information wasn't supposed to be made public to them or anyone else as the test wasn't even supposed to be for coke.

NSAC is in deep trouble on this one.

What monetary damages can he claim though? (I don't recall that he was fined). Will his PPV #'s plummet or something? Did he lose sponsors?

Anyway, yeah, NSAC fucked up, but I'm not sure pursuing and even winning a case will be worth it. What can he gain here?

aren't all test results open to public in nevada? they were asked for them, so they did what they had to, and released them.
