Given his transgressions in the past, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones isn’t exactly the perfect role model for young fighters. He is, however, a veteran in the game with enough knowledge and experience to draw from to offer up some advice.

In a recent Instagram post, “Bones” took it upon himself to give his younger contemporaries some tips on dealing with managers, particularly when it comes to compensating them.

Jon Jones advises young fighters: ‘No manager should ever be getting 20% of your money’

Who in the hell is getting 20%?? That’s nuts. Seven to ten is pretty much the standard, right?

unpopular opinion: everyone gave Jones a ton of shit for pulling out of that UFC when Henderson pulled out of with an injury a week or so before, but I think that was potentially an important move in telling management that they can't just jerk the fighters around and change things on them on a whim.

Of course it would never work out that way for any other non-star fighter without a union or association in place, but I can see the motivation, and certainly it wasn't fear of Chael. (unless maybe he had a broken toe premonition)

gently disagree. Chael was a non-threat, that was crazy (fuck-you-dana) cautious imo. I do get his point, butt fuck's sake. be the champion who believes in himself and drives carefully.

I could see this happening at lower levels. A manager with "good connections" promises to get an amateur fighter higher profile/professional fights.

"hey my cousin Jimmy is putting in pro fights, I can get you in but..."

Jon should write a series of books for young fighters. He could kick off the series with this, follow it up with driving tips, steroids, how to maintain composure when running from the scene of a crime etc... It could be a 20 book series.

    Malki is a slimy dude
but he has worked wonders for Jon...probably some really key payoffs and decisions have been responsible for keeping Jon fighting.

His advice should be more down the lines of,

“Make sure to account for exact cycle-off days...”

“Cocaine stays in your system for two days! two!!”

“Never fall down on your own, bring a friend down with you at all times”

    “Deny everything until proven”

“Don’t hit and run a car with a Pregnant lady, you can lose your belt”

“Eye poke when ref is not looking... if ref can see you with his peripheral vision, you failed”

    “Backstab people”

“When Drunk driving with minors, make sure they have a fake ID”

    “Hire a personal UBer driver”

The likelihood of him losing to Chael wasn't the biggest danger of him accepting the late replacement challenger. He was wise to not put their inability to have a contingency plan on his shoulders. He obviously saw something in the arrangement he didn't like so...

It should be but I've heard many people consider 10% to be cheap and 20% closer to the standard
