He goes in there to get punched again and again to entertain us.
Gaethje the punching bag. This dude needs to change his style , or he won't have a long career .

He might be my favourite fighter right now but fighting to put on a show is stupid, especially at the elite level.

Fuck that, fight smart.

Hes really likeable star. Seems genuine and down to earth. No WWE charactee theatrics. Just some good ol fashion toughness and willingness to fight.

That said, I'm not exactly excited to see dude take 300 power punches to the dome again.

He needs to make some changes to his style if he wants to beat the top guys and maintain his mental health.

he had the cage flip that he did after wins, but I don't think he's allowed to do that anymore. I guess that was a bit of a tell that he's a risk taker when it comes to cranial health!

Other than the unfortunate eye pokes, classy guy all around. You could see he was devastated.

Great interview. I don't wanna hear most of the other fighters talk for 10 minutes but I always wanna hear Gaethje and I won't miss a fight of his. it's not cool to take that much punishment and he wasn't landing that much this time iirc (have to rewatch it though. also my waters got muddy right at the time in the third where he landed a big shot and Porier backed up and i don't know what happened after that).

But the "300 power punches" must be taken into context too. Some fraction of that number (that I have no idea mow much is) were really powerful and are what busted Justin's face and won Poirier the fight but most of Poirier's punches and kicks while scoring perfectly had no fire in them. Hundreds of other fighters may get hit with similar or harders shots in sparring at least once a week (not that many times in one session but still you can get hit pretty hard in sparring by much bigger guys sometimes).

it's not like we can pinpoint and tell "I know this guy is getting more brain damage because of this and that". Gaethje absorbs a lot of punishment but he sounds like one of the smartest fighters and has a way out planned after five more fights and a post career plan lined up and the ability to pull it off. Most guys are in a much worse position and no one is worried about them.

I wouldn't even recommend getting punched once by 150-7th graders within 15 minutes but I see what you're saying.

Most casual fans probably don't give a shit at all. After over 25 years of watching boxing and almost two decades of MMA, I think I've seen enough of what can happen to guys who take a few too many. It's troubling to see your heroes all fucked up a decade later. Some but not all.

Every time I see a guy whose getting punched as much as Gathje, i think about the people supporting him. His team, fans, family. They likely know what's going on in training and if his personality/mental acumen is being affected.

So sure, as an fan I understand it's hard to quantify who is taking more critical damage and when. Idk.

I'm just saying, dude takes a lot of fucking damage. Im not some Captain Save-a-Fighter though. Their bodies, their choice. He's just pretty young. Hope he figures it out. A lot can happen in 5 fights.
