I recently went home, which is far far away from where I live, to see family for the holidays. I got to see my grandparents who are my two favorite people in the world.

I'm a much better person simply because I've had the privilege of knowing these people. My Grandpa is a man of many trades, but was mainly a woodworker during my lifespan. I spent many hours in his workshop, and he taught me endless skills.

He taught me a lot about problem solving. He taught me a number of techniques I have used to this day that have helped me become an engineer and has provided a rather comfortable life for myself. Much more so than anyone in my family anyway. He also taught me how to treat people. He taught me how to love people. To this day, he is the wisest person I have ever met.

He's raised five kids and has many grandchildren as well as great grandchildren. He has built very successful businesses and built great friendships. When I was growing up, I regularly met people from counties over and, low and behold, they knew my grandfather. It seemed the man knew everyone and was in very good repore with them.

He's the toughest man I've ever met. He's shaved his fingertips off with the table saw more times than anyone cares to count. It got to the point where he wouldn't even stop working when it happened. I had to point it out to him and he'd simply say, "Meh, give me 15 minutes and I'll go in the house and let your Grandma take care of it." He's had more heart attacks and strokes than I can count. He has diabetes. He's in his 80's and simply has health issues. Over the years, he's just kept keeping on.

My mom called me today to tell me he will most likely die within the next week or so. She seemed much more composed than I would have expected. After I got off the phone with her, I called my Grandma who told me he likely only has a couple of days. We ended the call when the priest knocked on the door to read him his last rites.

This man lived an incredibly fulfilling life and positively affected a great amount of people. He loved his wife like no other and took care of his family. He tried to help people whenever he could. Honestly, I've told him he's too charitable. I'm likely wrong. This man's funeral will likely be the largest event in the county this year. He lived his life correctly.

Don't waste your life. Protect your health. Love your companion. Love your family. Do your best to help others. Be kind. Do what you enjoy. Learn as much as you can. Become an expert in something and teach others. Be patient with them.

Happy new year.

I have the same type of Grandpa. He drove a motorcycle with his new bride on the back to New Orleans over 70 years ago to make a better life and became an engineer. Raised 5 kids and hand built houses for each of them. He lost his wife last year at 92 years old and is still as sharp and positive as ever despite his failing health. He regrets nothing.

It is almost like we cheated at life having such great people around us. Not everyone is so fortunate.

If I may. My grandfather was taken from our family at a fairly young age, he in his 60's me only 5 at the time. I knew him, but never really knew him. Strange as it sounds the older I get the more I miss him, because the older I get the more I found out how alike he and I were. I really feel like not only was our family robbed of having him in our lives, but also that he was a little cheated out of what would have been. I barely remember him, but I miss him everyday.

I'm glad to hear that you spent time with him when you could and that you have many memories to look back on and cherish.

By contrast mine was a wife beating racist with a pathological hate for anyone European. He attacked his own daughter with a piss pan the very day he died from a long angry battle with cancer.

The man was hated and feared by all. He eradicated the native sandlewood from many of fijis islands, single handedly hunted the Polynesian fowl into extinction. Gave me a shot of rum at 8 years of age, wanted to go to hell cause "God's an asshole thats where he sends the good guys" fuck I should do a thread on him.

OP you're a lucky guy. God bless.

Memories last forever brother keep them alive and pass them into your kids one day.

My Grandfather got me started in sailing as an infant and boxing in my late teens and I'm still doing both to this day.

Even though he's gone in body, his spirit lives on through me.

A clip of the race team I am on from last spring. I'm in the orange hat.
