Turnpike Troubadours recently made their triumphant return after Evan Felker had an extended time away cleaning his life up. One of the first places they played was Cain's Ballroom - which, if you know Turnpike, you know they reference in their song "Left My Heart in Tulsa". They aren't super well-known here in the Midwest, but they are very popular out in the land of Red Dirt. Them playing at Cain's was huge - and long awaited.
When this song kicks in, and literally everyone in the place is screaming the lyrics - so much that it almost drowns out the band - being at a concert when that happens is truly awesome.
Also - If you are going to get to a Turnpike show in Tulsa early enough to be up close, do your fucking homework. Ryan Engleman is always stage right. Who wants to see a bass player pluck strings when you can watch Ryan jam out? Other than that, solid video here.
How I found Turnpike:
My wife and I took a road trip out to Colorado and made a week vacation out of an Old 97s show at Red Rocks. Turnpike happened to be the headliner - who I had never heard of. I was just there for Old 97s who were the 2nd opener in a 4 band show. Haha. Anyway, Old 97s is playing their set and the rest of the crowd at Red Rocks is pretty much ignoring them. They were as ignorant of Old 97s as I was of Turnpike. Until Old 97s played their song "Doreen" - the place went fucking nuts. At the time I had no clue why. I mean, it's a good song but not their best. It wasn't until later I found out that Turnpike covered that song on their 2nd album which is why everyone there knew it.
Anyway. Despite never hearing any of their songs, Turnpike killed it and I loved the show. We listened to their stuff on the 18 hour drive home. Solid. Then we found out they were playing 3 weeks later at a hydroplane race we were already attending. We obviously went to that and they killed it again. Had tickets to another show but that's when their lead singer checked into rehab. Hopefully I can see them one more time before they get too big - not much interest in seeing them at a big stadium.

Saw this dude open up for Steel Pulse and Rebelution Sat night
He was very good, future is bright
Did kick ass BadFish(sublime) cover and a Cover of a David Bowie song(Moonage Daydream) both were A+...The Bowie one was epic View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfSMSWNMPHs
Steel Pulse killed it, despite their age(biggest hits were 1982-84) they had great energy and were one of the best live shows I have seen...very impressed...Band is Tight Tight
Not a Rebelution Fan but they do put on a show, singer is nasally annoying...Band is great...Lots of lights and production value...Might have just seen them too many times...they have a fat white dude on Sax now and he is a killer and an improvement
This came out in 1985. I was 12 when I first heard this - and it was this live version with Bruce doing the dialogue in the lead up.
Crazy intense. But if you think about it, we were only 10 years removed from Vietnam back then. That's 2012 compared to today, which feels like yesterday.
