According to George Lockhart, the nutritionist and hydration specialist to numerous MMA fighters including Cyborg, most fighters he works with float around a pound of their contracted weight. There was no intention to push her to 139 instead of 140, but rather, that occurred as a natural by-product of their cutting process.

The more lucrative financial and sporting opportunities, however, exist at women's bantamweight with names like Cat Zingano, Ronda Rousey, Juliana Pena, Holly Holm, Miesha Tate and others all competing in a weight class below her's.

Given where she is and where the money is relative to that - and the difference of three pounds for non-title bantamweight fights - how realistic is it now to get to 135?

"You hit the nail right on the head. Could she make the cut? Absolutely," Lockhart said on Monday's The Luke Thomas Show. "She can make 135. She can make 130, but performing? That's another question. That right there comes down to time. She put in a lot of time for this."

Lockhart argues pushing Cyborg to a number on a scale isn't really the issue. Instead, it's what the fighter will be able to reasonably accomplish in the course of resource depletion to achieve it.

"People don't realize how hard it was just to get down to 139. She had to do three-a-days every single day of the week. Sundays she had a day off, but still. Three-a-days, it's a lot. She's running, doing a lot of road work."

It would take a year to get Cris to 135 and to make sure she performs at her best. It is not something she could do on the regular so imo there is no point. Maybe a couple fun fights but she would never be able to defend a title as often as the UFC might want.

For once I'm with Joe Rogan on the subject of Cris Cyborg cutting to 135 (from yesterday's podcast with Callen and Schaub). She's the 145 pound champion, and the baddest female fighter on the planet currently, so why not create a new UFC division and make her champ? Take the Invicta 145 pounders and move them over. But there aren't enough talented fighters at that weight currently. There weren't enough bantamweights either, but build it and they will come. While we waited (and continue to wait) for that talent pool to fill, we got to witness one of the sports biggest stars emerge - Ronda Rousey.

i agree then those that have a hard time cutting to 135 can join the new 145 division. I think everyday the rousey star fades the UFC will start creating the 145 division

Those 135ers were in Invicta, there aren't equivalent 145ers for the UFC to snap up and start a 145 division. It's like 135 is heavyweight for Women's MMA, 145 is super heavyweight.

This except that all the fighters besides cyborg fighting at 145 are naturally 135, 125, and 115ers.

So you're saying there wouldn't be a 145 pound equivalent of title contender Bethe Correira in two years if the UFC made that division today?

Agree there just isn't enough women to make a 145lb division that you could even be competitive. Just look who Cyborg has fought over the years that haven't moved up in weight, her last fights were with at best mid level fighters.. Fiona Muxlow 6-3, Charmaine Tweet 9-5, Faith Van Duin 5-2, Daria Ibragimova 9-2. These fighters stats show not a whole lot of experience, Not the best records, Losses some have had were against 135ers and most even hard core fans have never heard of with not so great records. Just shows there isn't a whole lot of women fighting at this weight class.
These are the best they can find to fight Cyborg, to me that's sad. She IS a great fighter but not competing against the best women in the world. She came in at 139lbs for her fight against Smith, only three more lb's she could fight at Bantomweight (unless it's a Championship fight). Even if Chris lost a bit of muscle she still has way more power than most and has very good technique. As far as cementling a legacy and making way more cash it's probably the best move for her to make.

Even if Chris lost a bit of muscle...
That's the elephant in the room. She could make 135 easy if she dropped as little as 5 lbs. of muscle from her unnaturally muscular frame. But she doesn't want to affect her "performance" by slightly reducing her massive strength advantage, so she continues to fight much smaller, natty women at 145 instead. Boo hoo.

Cyborg natural weight is 175 lbs of muscle she is bigger than dominic cruz and conor mcgregor. she is 5'9" she has to lose 20lbs of muscle to walk around at 155 lbs and cut an additional 20 lbs of water weight.

She might die trying to make 135 lbs she is very large and lean for 135 lbs even larger than carano, holm and rousey.

Whoa!!! Breaking NEWS!!! Cyborg just made a statement on the "other site" in the "Hilarity" thread that she can't make 135. Argument for both sides is done and over with. Can't make 135, stop calling out 135'ers and vice versa.

Yeah, all of that muscle is super "natural," and no fighter ever had reduced their muscle mass later in their careers.

I remember when Cormier used to claim that he'd die if he tried to make 205. He had a legit history of kidney issues...but then he just started eating less food and started his cut from a lower weight.

That is exactly what would happen. In some cases the move might be permanent, and in other cases you would have bigger drawing match-ups at a catch weight. It's not going to happen overnight. The 135 pound division barely has a top five, so it's not as if the UFC hasn't dealt with this exact same scenario before (and currently). As long as the fights continue to bring in an audience, then that's all that matters.

So the plan is to cannibalize an already weak division, to create an even weaker division, in the hopes that some Beth Correira's turn up in a few years? This sounds awful.
