Demian Maia thought he would get a spot on UFC 198's main card given his current four-fight winning streak when he faces Matt Brown, on May 14.

Currently riding a four-fight winning streak and preparing to fight a Top 10 opponent in Matt Brown, Demian Maia was hoping he would land a main card spot at UFC 198. However, as the Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace told Combate, he was dumbfounded to find out he was still in the prelims.

"Of course I wanted to be on the main card. I was on the poster before Cris Cyborg got on the card. Honestly, I don't get it. I just fought on the main card of last year's biggest event, one of the biggest of all time. But it's like I always say. I only worry about what I can control. And what I can control is to fight in the best way I can. So I'll go in there and…

They are doing their best to not promote him. This fight is better than most fight night main events.

I thought Maia vs Brown was the main event of the prelims, a spot that can give you MORE exposure than being on the PPV itself potentially, and it's a spot Urijah Faber certainly likes having.

it's like appearing in an episode of Game of Thrones instead of appearing in an Avengers movie :)

Its because hes not fun to watch. 98% of people watching MMA want to see a fist fight not a humping and grinding session with a few submission attempts thrown in.

Cant bring myself to watch any of his fights since the Chael fight.

Poor Chael is getting ready for fisticuffs and entertain the crowd and then heres Maia humping his leg and going for a TD followed by a lame submission.

No thanks.

well many diehards definitely want him to be BJJ Maia and not K1 Maia, and don't have a problem with 1 fight on the card being guaranteed to have high level grappling. I like your Chael comments though :D

K1 Maia vs Wideman was fun to watch. Especially when they were both taking deep frantic breaths for air after 2 minutes.

Weidman cut too much weight in too short a time, it's actually changed the way he approaches his career.

his own admission.

Maia is a wizard i'll watch him wherever he fights. And Jehannum @Jehannum i agree he will get a lot of exposure not only for himself but for the whole grappling community being on the main prelim spot. If he doesn't get ppv points then who cares.

He's the featured preliminary bout, a slot they've put Urijah Faber in multiple times.

Why? Because they're hoping people watch the prelims on cable and that the last fight they see is awesome enough to make them want to buy the PPV.

I'm thinking this fight should be highly entertaining. Brown isn't the type to get drawn into a chess match and I find Maia always brings something that impressed me.

Really looking forwardto that fight

I can't keep 198 & 199 straight
But maybe since hall/Silva are out..brown/maia will bump up
If it's even the same card I don't know anymore.

I read cole miller is someone's replacement...sooooo confused

Maia is going to want to drag the fight to the mat and Brown is going to want to keep it standing. I think Maia will eventually win the battle but you can never count a guy like Matt Brown out.

Don't think many will disagree with this. The problem I see is that Brown is exclusively a pressure fighter, if he's not moving forward doing damage he really isn't doing much else. Clinching is his go to but I think this will be risky against Maia who is amazing with taking guys down, chain wrestling and basically having his way with them. If brown can resist the urge to close them gap and show a bit of patience then he might have about more success but that's just a guess. I'm curious to see how the clinch goes in this fight and I think it could be the deciding factor on how and where this fight takes place.

Rory effectively shut Maia down but he got taken down and lost the first round. He also got taken down in the third and would have likely lost if he had been kept there, but Maia's fatigue and an incredible escape by Rory Mac allowed him to get the fight back to the feet, where he could use his range and superior boxing to pick Maia apart. Rory also had multiple awesome sprawls in that fight.

All that being said, Brown does not have the same tools Rory Mac does, and Maia is a very large welterweight. If they clinch, then Maia will likely get him down, and I don't see an easy way for the Immortal to get back up.

Rory vs Maia was an awesome fight. I think Matt's pressure style will play into Damian's skill set and give him lots of opportunities to capitalize on Browms reckless approach. This should be fun
