Just a little over two weeks since his brain-shaking knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239, the UFC is reportedly planning a fight for Ben Askren already. According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, “Funky” will be matched up against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Demian Maia once he is cleared to fight again by September.

UFC is currently discussing booking Ben Askren vs. Demian Maia once Askren’s medical suspension is up in September, according to sources.

Askren was dealt his career first loss by “Gamebred” in just five…

This was the fight I first suggested the UFC make if they wanted to try and derail Askren.

Maia has this on the feet, so Askren would need to be pretty confident in his ground game to win this.

The more I think about this fight, the less excited I get. Could be a huge snooze fest.

Is Ben going to try to keep it on the feet? If so, we'll probably see Maia win with the most boring jab strategy ever.

Will Ben take it to the ground? If so, it's either a long technical battle that goes to decision on probably a very close fight, or Maia catches him.

Askren I have a hard time seeing him win this fight.

Honestly, if Ben wants to get back in fast this is the perfect fight. There isn't another fighter in the division where you know for certain that you wouldn't take any serious striking damage.

I love watching Askren fight, but this one definitely has the potential for a long and not so action packed fight. Ben's best chance is to stick to being Ben and take him down and smother him. If not, Maia probably has enough striking to do exactly as you said and jab him to a decision.

They are both so good on the ground that I wonder if we’ll see the return of K1 Maia and the debut of sloppy strike Askren.
K1 Maia was packing above average heat in his hands. I'd like to see him again for a round or two.

Strangely enough, Maia needs to channel his Maia/vs Marquardt old self if he fights Ben :p

Here's hoping Maia KOs him when Bendover goes for his only relevant fighting technique. Maybe 4 seconds this time?

I was at that fight, anniversary present from my wife.

Sucked to see Maia lose like that
I remember that fight for two reasons, Maia damn bear did a somersault in mid air and Nate pulled that punch at the last second.

I respect it when fighters don’t throw a shot when a guys obviously done.

This is the type of fight I want with Askren. I don't like him clogging up the championship picture. I think he is in the same vein as Ryan Hall. A specialist who's entertainment value comes in stylistic match ups.

Man, I rooting so hard for Maia!!
Also, why not, hoping for a hardfought grappling-match. Would be fun if Maia could turn Askren on his back and keep him there.
Or is Askren got his haircut stuck in the fence or something :D

you mean his inner-Chael?

My alcoholic dad could submit Chael, and that sub started from mount.

We haven't seen Maia be that dangerous off his back - he gets his subs from the top. And it's going to be pretty damn hard to get top position on Askren.
