Haywood, the Yankees slugger/first baseman in the 1989 film, was played by Peter Vuckovich.

In real life, Vuckovich (6'4", 220 lb) was a starting pitcher in MLB from 1975-1986. He won the Cy Young Award while pitching for the Brewers in 1982.

He wasn't the slugger in real life that the movie made him out to be. Most of his career was in the AL where he didn't have to bat, but he did have a 3-year stint with the Cardinals. In 208 ABs, his lifetime average was .159 with 0 HRs.

From his Wiki page:
Vuckovich developed a reputation for bizarre, hyper-competitive behavior during his 12 season career. He would fidget, twitch, pace, and convulse while on the mound. He was known to cross his eyes and stick his tongue out at batters. He would spit in his glove, scream at umpires while in the stretch, and sometimes step to the back of the mound and dry heave. His colorful personality made him a fan favorite.

Major League was the only movie he was ever in.

He's currently a scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
